Thanks to this forum I now have an operational 1952 8N. Charging problems fixed, battery stays charged, thanks "sound man". I am thinking about buying a PTO driven rototiller. I asked this question already and most everyone said my 8N's ground speed would be too fast. I forgot to mention that my 8N has a dual speed transmission. There is a lever on the left side of the transmission that gives me 8 forward speeds. With the transmission in low gear the tractor really just crawls. Would a tiller work with a tractor such as mine? Also how do I identify what kind of transmission is in my 8N?

Sorry to shout. Anyway, why don't you videotape the tiller in use and post it on photobucket with a link posted here. that'll show all of us.

As others have said don't waste your $$ on a tiller it just plain will not work. BTDT and tried one on my 841 with a sherman combo tranny and NO it didn't work well even in super low low it didn't work. It didn't go to fast but becasue the sheramn also slows down the PTO the tiller didn't turn fast enoguh to do more then jump all over the place

Hogster..... .only Shermans have their tranny shifter lever over yer left toe; all other aux trannys shifters are over yer right toe. Isn't that amazing???

The rare and fragile "Howard" aux tranny shifter is in the 6" round dipstick plate behind yer right heel. Iff'n you don't have that RARE aux tranny, yer N-Tractor is just TOO FAST for rototilling PERIOD!!! I don't care how slow you think yer left toe shifted aux tranny slows yer tractor, its still TOO FAST!!! Understand???

Don't squander yer money on enny PTO driven rototiller. It just don't work.

Back in the 70's near Lodi Calif, I used to see 3-point lifted, aux engined rototillers behind N-Tractors being dragged thru the grapevines. They were NOT PTO driven 'cuz they had aux engines. And NO, I don't know who made them, I wasn't interested..... ....Dell

Maybe him and John Hunt can get together and prove us all wrong about them tillers.

John seems to be running a 4' one and having a good ole time with it on a 9N.

But then next thang I hear is he is still hunting his PTO shaft, go figger!!

As you have heard.. the N is generally too fast for rototilling. Also.. pre trannis slow the ground speed AND the pto speed. Certain post trannies like a everet trencher tranny.. or a howard rotovator tranny actually slow ground speed but not pto speed.. Did I mention they are real hard to find?

If your soil is loose and sandy.. you may get by with a vary small tiller and / or a few passes.. however.. these are not ideal tiller machines.

A 5-6-8-10 speed tranny from one of the later hundred or thousand series units.. plus their extra ponies would be more suited to this task.

That said.. your N will pull a 2 bottom ( 2-10, 2-12 or 2-14 OR 1-16 ) all day long.. plus easilly pull a 6.5' double gang disc...

Hogster: If you have a crooked-leg or kinda v-shaped lever in a 1952 it is most likely a 3-speed Sherman. Fool around with the lever while the engine is idling and you are holding the clutch down and disengaged. Somewhere in the middle of low and high you should be able to pull the shifting lever about an inch away from the transmission lever then pull it up and into gear (you may need to push it down) I forget. Anyway, you hunting for the middle range which is exactly the ratio you would have without this Sherman. Mike

While you have your tractor in 1st gear, and the Sherman in low, get off and take a look at the PTO shaft. It will be turning so slow you can count the RPMs. The ONLY transmission that I know of that will slow the tractor while keeping the PTO RPM up to what is needed to run a rotovator is the Howard. Lever by your right heel. Rare, fragile, and wonderful if you have a working one.
