I have seen several Fords with an axe mounted on the side of the hood. This would require 2 holes 6"-8" apart at one end of the hood and 1 hole about 2' away.

You may never know - I have 3 holes on each side of my 8N hood back near the dash and thought it would be easy to find out what was there from the mechanics that serviced it. Seems the holes were there for at least 20 years that the oldest mechanic had been working on that tractor and he never knew. There is just way too much history in
a 49 year old tractor to have every question answered.

Paul...A HeatHouser was the brand name for a canvas windbreaks that were common on tractors anywhere it got cold in the winter. The canvas attached on the sheet metal around the engine and the fan blew warm air to an operator shrouded in more of the canvas. You can still buy "tractor heater cabs" through CT Farm and Country. Some brands may have called for drilling holes in the sheet metal to hold part of the frame. Is your tractor from the north? If holes are only on the left side, some models had a kind of a little canvas door on and this would have called for more reinforcement. When guys got a HeatHouser for fall plowing and winter chores they really thought they were in luxury! Mike-Iowa

These could be spot weld holes that have rusted through.

Any body with a drill can make holes. There are not stock and off hand I can't think of any after market things that would bolt there. Your guess is as good as mine, any thing from a extra tool box to a coffee cup holder.

Not being an N owner, I'm taking a chance on looking real stupid. I can't remember for sure which side the exhaust manifold is on, left or right. Could the holes be for a previous vertical exhaust setup? My 800 has the exhaust on the left side which is what makes me think of this as a possibility.
