I always seem to do dumb things when I get in a hurry working on my 8N. I needed to remove the hood to replace the thermostat. I asked my brother to help me remove it, but since it was winter and about 30 deg I was in a hurry (and freezing) Well, we got a grip on each side and lifted up the hood to a point where it wouldnt go any further-what the h---!! We couldnt get it to go back down properly either. Dummy me, in my haste, I forgot to undo the gas line and we had done bent it out of shape and couldnt turn loose of the hood without kinking the line. Needless to say, I replaced the gas line too.
Anybody else got any good bloopers?

I was about 15 and during the long snowy Missouri winter I went out everyday and chopped ice at the pond so 250 Angus Beef Cattle could drink.Snow cover rendered most fields featureless. One day I decided I could expedite this .I thought if I put one front tire on the 4020 Deere Tractor on the edge of the pond it would crack the ice. Much to my horror the tractor slid down the bank and out onto the ice. There it set and boy was I worried.I headed home at a trot to get a tractor to pull it back up the slope. And then... a terrible cracking noise. As I looked back at Dad's favorite tractor , it went down in the drink like a giant green olive in a Martini.I thought I was a dead person. Dad took it better than I thought .After a month of struggling with it(three professionals tried without success) we finally recovered it. Some hotshot with a Ford F700 pulling a wheelie drug it out of there. When it was in there you could see the exhaust and some of the seat.I steer clear of deep water ever since.

Due to the recent heavy rains, the road to our central Texas ranch-gate is pretty washed out. A large rock went thru my wife Jamie's transmission oil-pan as she (fortunately) arrived home. The next day she called me in Dallas to tell me about the huge puddle of "red fluid" all over the breezeway drive.
These things only happen when I'm out of town.

I had her call the wrecker service and the transmission shop over in the nearest town and four days and $500 later she would have her car back.

(And when the wrecker showed up, Jamie didn't want the dog to "play" with the driver so she closed the door to the house with the dog inside. After the wrecker was gone...yep...she discovered she'd locked herself out of the house with her keys still inside. Recent rains had washed away our hidden keys (they're probably somewhere halfway down the Colorado river to the Gulf by now), so she called me again about how to get into the house.

I suggested that she call the locksmith and when he lets her back into the house to make certain to hide another set of keys. I thought a good place might be in the wood-box (where a half-cord of firewood could be stored for the living-room fireplace....if I ever get around to cutting it up and putting some in there.) She agreed. The locksmith drove the 35 miles round trip and only charged $75 because he couldn't figure out how the antique locks work in our old hunting-lodge-home. Jamie had to explain to him how the edge of the door had a locking button on it, and so he then used a special tool he'd had but never-before-used to unlock it. (I showed her my off-set screwdriver and she said "Yes! That's it!) third party image
Three days later when I arrived home, I asked if she'd placed keys in the wood-box and she said, "Not yet." so I went outside to do so.
I opened the wood-box...and there... inside the woodbox....staring me in the face...was the other door...the one that opens directly into the living-room...unlocked! I have no idea why I thought to tell her to hide a key there and didn't think about suggesting she simply re-enter the house thru the big woodbox. third party image
When it rains,...it pours.
I guess we'll have to start locking the woodbox now. third party image

Got coned into a sucker game at the county fair, seams I lost 2 weeks pay. I called the local paper and reported it and found out when I talked to the police another guy had reported the same thing happen to him. At the time I think it was $800, next day went back with the law and the other guy and settled for $600 and a big arse teddy bear. The other guy lost $1800 and I am not sure what he settled for. To make matters worst I was up $200 or so but took the bait and lost. All this starterd out with a $5.00 bill. It looked so good I could not loose me standing their with $200 of his money. it was some kind of food ball game were you had to make 100 yards for a touch down, the first 90 yards were a piece of cake. Then I keep hit'n 2X, 3X, 4X times the bet next thing I know I am clean'n out my wallet and give'n him my money. he sure enuff had the board rigged. The law shut'em down the next nite. It was the FIRST time I fell fer any thing like that and the LAST.

Hey, Hobo, my daddy always told me "A fool and his money are soon parted". I listened to him. Mine leaves me pretty fast, too, but not like that. You were lucky to get it back.

Ken, I don't know if I won the prize or Dunk.

Me and a guy at work needed a small amount of Round Up for around the house and decided to split a qt.that was about 25.00. I took my half in a 30w qt.oil bottle, took it home and used some and put it on the shelf. Later started to mow with my old Ford rear engine 7HP mower and needed to top of the oil. Took off my bifocals and put on sunglasses and got a qt of oil off the shelf and added a small amount. Mowed about an hour and stoped for it to cool before puting in the shed. Started to put in shed and it would not pull with the cord. removed and took to the shop and the cyl, piston and valves had a hard like varnish on them. Found that I had added Round Up to the crank case. Cleaned, ringed and used for another few years. Wear your glasses.

mine has to be mixing a dream and reality, [ before i met my ex wife] i was in the towing business, and got up at around 2 am something went on a 30 mile wrecker call only i couldnt find the wreck, called the police dept on the radio, and found out that there wasnt a wreck anywhere, i had dreamed the whole call, then answered it for real, i was reminded of that incident for the next 10 years!

I was changing the oil in my Snapper rider; while it was standing upright draining the oil I decided to take the blade off and sharpen it as well. In the process I cut my finger pretty good, so I went to doctor that. By the time I got back I had forgotten that I was changing oil as well as sharpening the blade, so I put the blade back on, dropped her down and cranked her up and started the first cut around the yard. You know how long a 12-horse B&S will run without oil? About 40 seconds. That ain't long.

I think I got that one beat..

I said it 5 times for I learned better..

4 X wives, been married 5 times, and been divorced 6 times (yes at one time we had common law here) #1, I married, divorced her, remarried her, divorced her again. #2 I married, divorced, then we lived together, and had to get another divorce. #3 I married and divorced. #4 I married and divorced.

I have been living with one for 15 years now, helped raise the 9 kids she had when we got together, and I DO is no longer part of my vocabulary.

And yall wonder why I am the way I am...

Bruce, I did the exact same thing recently. What scares me is that if I'd walked away, the pump would have emptied ALL the oil out of the engine in just a few minutes. Then I'd be looking at a REBUILD.

I was changing the oil in the 1950 frontmount in the driveway. I hand tightened the large nut on top of the canister & for some reason could not find the very same wrench I had used to remove it just 10 minutes before. So, rather than walk into the garage & get another wrench, I went on to replacing the drain plug, dumping the used oil in the recycle container & adding the new oil.

I cranked the engine up & checked for leaks.

This is a 2 year old rebuilt engine w/ about 50 lbs of cold oil pressure.

Do you want to guess how much oil can come out of the top of a hand-tightened oil filter canister in the time it takes to start the engine, look at the canister, and then turn the engine off?

If you guessed just short of a full quart, you guessed right!

Makes a nice "stupid" reminder in the middle of the paved driveway too!

I had this happen with my 2N. Seems the new rubber gasket that came with the new filter was defective. I cranked tractor and drove down the road for a "test run" as is my practice. Soon I saw oil sprayed all over the side of the tractor. It dumped nearly a quart. Put the old rubber gasket back on and no problem since. This tractor carries very nearly 50# oil pressure cold and had its engine overhauled in '78, and has been used a lot since. Proves how tough these little old Fords are.

Bruce,

I did the exact same thing with my 9N. I think I made it most of the way to the barn before I noticed the entire left side of the tractor was covered in oil.

Sigh...

Buy a Tisco aftermarket head...

Besides that - when I was putting my engine back together on my '48 8N after getting it back from the machine shop. I had everything installed, crank shaft, cam shaft, valves - I was bolting the front timing cover in place when I discovered my oil galley plugs sitting on the work bench...

Stupid is... in reply to Dan, 07-26-2007 04:40:04
Many of my stupidest mistakes have been right here on these boards for everyone to read. I see no need to recap them, but a search of my user name will turn up some doosies.

But I've never told the one where I finished putting all the extraneous parts on a Volkswagen engine I bought. When I mounted the crankshaft pulley, I decided to mark it with white paint at, IIRC, 21 degrees BTDC and 32 degrees BTDC (the generally accepted timing range) so I could check the timimg more easily with my trusty 6-volt strobe light.

I laid out everything very carefully and used a protractor to make CERTAIN I found the 21 and 32 degree points.

You've probably already guessed that what I marked was, in fact, 21 and 32 degrees AFTER TDC...
