I was doing some plowing with my 8N. I( had it in 1st gear as I didn't want to tax anything. As I attempted to put it into reverse, the tractor stalled. It would not shift nor could I engage the starter. It appears to be stuck in gear. I have jacked up the back wheels with one wheel just touching the ground. I did remove the tranny cover but don't want to pry on anything until I am sure what I should pry on. I do have the FO-4 manual but need help as to what I should be prying on.

This tractor has not given me any grief before this. Did I do something wrong? I do baby the machine but it is like part of my family.

Please help.

The slots where the gear shift lever is supposed to fit are probably badly worn. They probably need to be either welded up or replaced. If you are careful when shifting and make certain that you are using the correct procedure when shifting locking up like that can be avoided even with a lot of wear. Just be sure that you pull the shifter straight back or forward when preparing to shift to the other gear. Do the same when putting it into a gear. Pulling sideways on the shifter is a sure way to lock up the transmission with a worn shifter.

Do not pry on the shifters themselves. There are two C shaped shifters and the reverse rail and they will bend if you try to pry on them and then you have even more trouble to fix.

Pry on the gears themselves. You can tell which ones are engaged by the position of the shifters. They will all be lined up in the center when the transmission is in neutral. What you have is two gears engaged at one time and it has bound up the gears.

Zane;

The transmission is unstuck. I did what another person had said about turning the engine in reverse and I could hear the gears come loose. The shift plates returned to nuetral and all is good. I ran it through the gears and it shifts fine. Thanks to everyone that replied and offered help.

Well I am trying thi sweekend. So I pry on the gears. Will do. As you say I must have gotten sloppy w/the shifting. As it looks right now, The top rail shift fork is all the way back. The reverse shift plate moves back and to nuetral position ok but the 2nd and 4th gear shift plate does not. I am to assume 2nd and 4th are locked or is it that 1st and 3rd are locked that 2nd and 4th are locked. The ball on the bottom odf the shifter looks real good.

Always try to follow your "H" pattern when shifting.

As foggy as my memory gets I do remember doing that many years ago with mine, and I was able to take the tranny cover off, and pry them out, very carefully. No new parts, and I haven't had it happen again.

There has been a couple of folks here lately that didn't seem to be able to do that.

They have, so far, not posted back with the "rest of the story", as far as I can remember.

" The rest of my story" it was not good. I was shifting to a higher gear and "lock up". Worst case was I had broken 2nd gear (both the 2nd gear and the idler for 2nd gear). I had to split the tranny out, to say the least was a learning experence. When you remove the bolts that hold the tranny shaft, DO NOT stand in line with the shaft! The preasure was great! Best to loosen all bolts instead of taking them all the way out one at a time, when you get to that last one be careful. I hope yours is just shifted into 2 gears. For moral support just repost.

Lots Of Luck , joe
