Oil Leak-- Fix suggestions?

I traced a small oil leak from the front of the pan, along the lip where it bolts to the block, up to the source----the oil line terminal block where it screws into the block.

There is no leaking from either of the 2 lines that hook into the terminal block fitting.

Is there a compound or oil resistant "teflon" tape that can be put on the threads before tightening it up, or is that not necessary.

What would be the best way to fix it?

Thanks, Tim

I always peek at the threads when I take the old fitting out to toss away. It usually makes it a breeze to just clean them up a little with the correct tap. Then with the goo recommeded it is a done deal.

8N'r,
Sounds like these guys got you fixed up.
Did you buy that Love Disc you asked about on the other forum a while back.
Just curious how it went.

Re: Oil Leak-- Fix suggestions?--Disc Results in reply to Ultradog MN, 08-01-2007 15:21:41
Yes I did---overall it was in fair shape. None of the disc had any cracks, bends, or chips in them and they measured 15 1/2"---if they were 16" discs, it wasn"t used very much.

One small crack on one of the cross members that should be an easy weld. Bearings are not shot but should have been greased a lot more and will eventually need to be replaced.

I ended up paying $175 for it so if I can use it for a few years I figured I got my moneys worth out of it. If I can find replacement bearings, I will fix those and keep the disc.

Do you have any idea where I can look for replacements for the bearings. I won"t pick it up for a few more weeks and can get specific measurements on the bearings then.

Tim

Folks have been known to crack the casting by over tightening the pipe fitting. The oil then leaks through the crack - not past the threads.

They are flare fittings, seal is in the flare and the threads have nothing to do with the leak. Usually it is a nick or dent on one of the flares or a cracked tube. I seat leaky flares by removing the fitting and lapping them with compound, clean, replace and tighten snugly. If the tube is cracked it needs replacing. If flare is damaged severely the fitting needs replacing.

Sorry, I just noted you said no leak from the tubes. The teflon answer is good, small amount if liquid type best.

I use teflon pipe dope from Home Depot with good results (cheap).

The fitting is pipe thread where it screws into the block. Remove it, clean it up, free of oil, then put some pipe joint paste with teflon on it and put it back together.

Bob---thanks--just the info I needed--I didn't want to just "tighten" it until I broke something.

Will regular "plumbing" pipe compound work?

In a pinch i have used the compound for metal fittings... Just don't over do it.. spread it ont he threads.. then take a napkin and clean the first leading thread..

My self I use silicone sealer on them. But I also keep the stuff on hand all the time. I have found the silicone sealer works good and the part also will come back off easy if there is ever a need to remove it again.
