Looks like 2" socket would do. Is that size working for anyone?

I don't think a pipe wrench gets past the lugs.

I worked around a few big rigs and hammer and chisel were used on large axle nuts. But, I don't think they were preload type (actually, they were double nut. Set the first nut with light preload and use a second for locking).

The two piece nuts on my hubs are 1 7/8. Here's a tip. Do not use a 12 pt socket. Make sure it is a 6 pt cause a 12 pt socket will trash the inner nut when you are trying to torque it down. Ask me how I know.

That big nut needs 450 ft/lbs of torque, and it is bigger that 2", 2 1/8" I think, others will confirm.

My 48 8N has a 2 inch nut.
I purchased a 6 piece wrench set from Agrisuply for $32.95 It worked well for me to tighten it. Their cost for the set is less than most charge for just the 2 inch wrench.

My first true old iron tool from my wife was a big 2" combination wrench. It is about 3' long and with my 190 lb. body hanging off the end of the wrench puts the torque at about right for these nuts, plus it is slightly angled to get past the lug nuts.

The two part squeeze 'um repair nuts are slightly smaller than 2", but I am not sure right now what that size is.

Dan

No longer recollect the size, but my uncle had a long combo wrench like that on the axle clamp nut on his Farmall M once and sent me flying through the air during the removal process.

His burning torch emptied while trying to heat the clamp to get'er loose. I had one foot on the axle, one on the middle of the wrench and hands on the fender, while he whacked the end of the wrench with a post maul, eventually breaking the box end and throwin' me off.

Despite the abuse, Sears actually gave him another wrench.
