Frustrated - 8N doesn't run well with strain put on it.

Okay, here's the long story short… have an 8N that would die after about 90 minutes of use. Got worse after vacation and died 20 minutes after use. Would turn over after that but would not fire. Tried a few things but nothing happened. Not being mechanically inclined and needing it quick, I let a local guy work on it… he has many years of experience working on lawn and tractor equipment. This is what he has done and what is new on the tractor:

Points
Distributor Cap
Ignition Coil
Plugs
Plug wires
New wiring harness
New On/Off switch
New Carb (yes, new carb)

He got it running and it runs well with no strain on the engine. When I hook my finish mower up to it and engage the PTO and try to mow, it spits, sputters, and eventually dies. When I put a strain on it, it's useless. Before all this happened, it was a pretty strong tractor… mowed through high weeds, go up hills no problem. He's coming back out tomorrow (not sure what else to do) and look at it. Is it internal like compression? Is the carb not set correctly? Gas? There's good gas flow to the carb.

I've spent 700 bucks so far on this overhaul and am pretty frustrated. Any suggestions? Thanks!

My 2N was doing that a month or two ago and it was a partially blocked fuel line, one of the screens had gotten plugged, wasnt getting enough fuel.

May be as simple as plug wires not being put on in correct order. BTDT had same problem.

What carb was used? M/S or Zenith? My personal opinion is that the Zenith is junk. Another issue is fuel filters. One inside tank, one inside sediment bowl & one on carb elbow. Also what about the grounds and general condition of the wiring?

If has been converted to 12volt did you put on an internally resisted coil or ballast resistor? If not the coil will overheat and break down.Check the coil and it will be HOT.

Front or side mount distubutor?? If its a side mount the timing could be off a little. Or your carb could be set to lean or to rich. Or the point gap could be set wrong. .015 for front mount and .025 for side mount. You also said it has been rebuilt so how many hours does it have on it?? It could still be a little stiff and if so that could be the problem and it needs more brake in time

All replies are good. Mine did the same. Checked compression and had 2 cyls. under 90 psi. Ran good after rebuild. If cylinders are below 90psi try squirting in some engine oil through spark plug holes and recheck. If goes up rings are bad. good luck

Put a load on it again and when it starts to stumble, choke it a little bit. If it smooths back out, then he's got the carb set too lean.

I would check to see that none of the plug wires were switched or lose. If everything checks ok I would move the throdle from idle to 2/3 or full while engine is running and warmed up see if the tractor stumples or falters if it does the carb may need further adjustment.

Frank,

I'm really sorry to hear of your frustration, and I don't blame you at all!

We need to know a couple of things about your 8N.

Is it an original 6 volt system, or has it been converted to 12 volts?

Is it front mount distributor or side mount?

My first guess is that your mechanic missed the most important thing in this picture - a $26 coil. Your symptons sound like weak spark/weak coil.

Colin

Frank - Sorry, I now see that you did replace your coil! My apologies.

Colin

It maybe Re: Frustrated - 8N doesn't run well with strain pu in reply to Farmer Frank, 08-02-2007 09:19:52
It maybe an intake valve leaking. I would have said condenser but you replaced that rite! Try another condenser first, you just may have a new bad one you know those Chi/com parts rite?

Many people would consider running a compression/leakdown test at this point, certainly.

First, try this. Get a known good spark plug. Bend the electrode out to about 3/16 inch. Clamp the plug securely to a surface like the engine block.

Now, pull the wire off each cylinder in turn, and connect it to the special plug. If you mix them up, remember: firing order 1-2-4-3. Do them one at a time and you CAN'T mix them up.

Each cylinder should have a nice, fat, bright blue spark. If you get weak or discolored spark check the way the plug is clamped to ground and try again.

A narrow or discolored spark can make an engine miss under load.

If the tractor passes the spark test, you can run a compression test. If it passes the compression test, I'd get a flashlight and a dentist's mirror and check for rust in the tank, especially if the tractor is kept outdoors.
