After carb. rebuild, points, plugs, coil, condenser, new distributor cap, 8n runs good, but blew top nut and canister gaskets on oil filter. Still leaked (top of canister) after replacing (probably tightened too much). Oil pressure (when leaking) reads about 25. Can there be a problem other than needing gaskets again? Was fine before tune up!

Im an 8n virgin and have a 46 that smokes a bit and has for the 2 years Ive owned her and she loses about 2 qts of oil in a good day of mowing but recently started losing 1- 1/2 GALLONS of oil per somewhat less than a day of work. I would think it would smoke up the county but really doesnt smoke any more than before and I cant see any sign of major leakage anywhere on the plywood floor I park her on afterwards...any ideas?? I went thru 3 gallons of 15-40 in 2 days. I only show 10 lbs of pressure after an oil fill up at full throttle.

If it is a 46, it CAN'T be an 8N, it has to be a 2N.

I would start by checking the bell housing (where the oil ends up if you blow a rear main seal) for that large quantity of oil you"re losing.. it"s too much to be burning with no smoke cloud. I"d be surprised if an engine would run with that much oil in the mix! Check the bell housing drain. it has a cotter pin in it and sometimes gets too clogged with crap to allow fluid (oil) to escape. when you have bad rings as indicated by the oil smokey exhaust, you get more pressure in the crank case due to "blow by", which can blow a seal. if no oil is discovered in the bell housing, you can try pulling the spark plugs and look for oil fouled (or soaked) ones, although I strongly doubt the oil is being burned at that rate. good luck

Ricko..... ....did you know that the N-Engine holds 6-qts of oil with filter change??? Did you know that 1-1/2 gals is = 6-qts???? Do you know what happens to bearings when they no longer have OIL??? Do you know how much it costs to grind a crank that has been run WITHOUT oil to the bearing journals???

Do you know the difference between a 1946 tractor and a 1948 8N tractor??? 1946 has a 3-speed tranny and is called a 2N even though the engine s/n starts with 9N. The 1948 8N has a 4-speed tranny and engine s/n starts with 8N. Can you tell the difference between 3-speed and 4-speed trannys???

2-qts of oil burning in an 8-hr day of hard working is sign yer engine is TIRED and needs rebuilding. 1-gal in 8-hr day, yer engine is almost DEAD. 1-1/2 gal of oil yer engine is living on borrowed time.

Iff'n you insist on working yer tractor, use 50wt engine oil, it will slow down the usage in HOT WEATHER..... ..respectfully, Dell

That (good) oil pressure is NOT the cause of your problems. Overtightening or poor gaskets likely caused the problem.

It would be a good idea to disconnect the return line from the governor, and see if oil trickles out with the engine running, just to verify the return circuit from the filter isn't plugged.

However, even WITH the something plugged, the filter cover should hold 25 PSI of oil pressure.
