I'm looking to buy an 8n. I looked at it and when i opened the radiator cap, all that is in there is motor oil. The owners says its a bad head gasket, but i want someone elses opinon before buying it. Anyone who could help me out would be most appreciative.

Thanks

What you saw no doubt looked like motor oil; but it may well have been combustion products suspended in the coolant. This is indicative of a bad gasket and implies the owner is at least being honest with you about that.

Indiana Jones has an important point about that oil. Oftentimes a head gasket on a flat-head will blow with no lasting effects; but IF water did get in the oil and IF the tractor was run with water in the oil this one is potentially a rebuild candidate.

Check to see if there's water in the engine oil, or if the oil is perfectly clean (just been changed). If I saw either, I'd pass (unless you can get it real cheap).

Will it start & run?
Next, #1 compression test for all cylinders
#2 Pressure test for the cooling system
#3 Condition check for rear rims & wheels
#4 Verify year
#5 Condition of PTO & Hydraulics
