third party image

Greetings,
This is my fourth attempt to get a message up on this board. Hope it works this time!

I just want to say thanks to all of you for the invaluable knowledge contained on this board. I am in the process of repairing/restoring my late Aunt"s 49 8n which she purchased new.

When I removed the left rear wheel I found this "sprocket" clamped around the brake drum. My questions are:
1. Was this installed by the factory?
2. What was it used for and how?

I have included the link to the picture I placed in the Parts Gallery.

Thanks,
Ike

Thanks Guys....
Dell...Chris told me you did respond to my initial post but something in the picture link was deemed "a threat to national security" and the posting was nuked before I saw your response.

Please keep in mind that I am a city slicker and know NOTHING about farming. Did this "planter sprocket" fit inside the rear wheel and drive a short chain?

I was guessing they had used it as a stationary engine with the wheel off!

Does anyone have a picture they could share?

Thanks again,
Ike

It would have been a belt pulley, off the PTO ifn they had used it for a stationary engine.

The gear and sprockets/chain would have been to time something to the ground speed of the tractor.

Ike..... ..I answered this once before, pay attention. It did NOT come from the factory. It is a DEALER installed "timing chain" for a corn or cotton planter. By timing the planting spacing, you can "cross-cultivate" the rows to kill the weeds between the plants. It is NO LONGER used because chemical weed control is MUCH BETTER. I believe the planter was a "Kelly Planter", 12-9, 12-10, 12-11, 12-12; and used the 12-30 drive sprocket assy..... ..Dell

the sprocket drives a ferguson planter. i have one on my 8n. a large chain goes around the sprocket and connects to a smaller sprocket on the planter. -

I have seen this before on here, but I can't seem to find the topic right now (I hardly ever post when I am not intoxicated).

Seems a chain ran on it, and if my memory serves me corectly it was to run a planter.

In other words it came with a 3 point impliment, and was used to power that implement.

Did you know drunk posting is a crime if you are not careful you will get your key board revoked for 6 months for the 1st offense.
habitual offenders can have their computors removed.
Maybe you should get someone else to post when u are drinking

I've been down the road of DUI, been 3rd time habitual offender, 25 years ago, got the 3rd time fixed a year later... And got my license back...

Now I TUI (Type Under the Influence) haven't been busted and cuffed yet....

Friends don't let friends drive Fords, well at least that is what I heard somewhere...

I guess I will have to choose my friends carefully...
