Transmisson problems

Last night mowing and tractor came out of first gear (like it does on regular basis) and now I have a forward gear where neutral should be. I can find the place that a couple of the gears should be, but when I select those and release clutch it acts as if the parking brake is on and kills the engenie.

Any thoughts on where to start?
it is an 8N with the 4 speed trany.

Your gear shifter popped out of first gear.. but the tractor is still in first gear.. If you are super lucky, you are not stuck in 2 gears.

Don't try to find any more gears.

Try to shift back into 1st gear.. then shift out to neutral. If that does it.. you are ahead of the game.

In eaither case, you will need to pull the shifter cover ( watch out for flying detent spring ), and if not in neutral, then nudge the shift forks back into neutral. Then observe the bottom nub of your shifter.. see if it is worn down.. if so you will need to braze or weld it up.. or replace it. Also a good time to inspect the shifter patter sheetmetal jig under the top cover to make sure it is not excessively worn.. and to check for wear ont he shifter forks where the nub from the gearshift rides.

If you are real lucky.. no teeth popped, and it will go back to neutrral easy.. and then you can weld up the ball on the botom of the shifter.. and then file or groind into good fitting shape, and then not mess with it for another couple decades..

It feels more like 3rd or 4th gear that it is in. I can not tell because I did not use them much, but it is a really fast gear.

Do as sound has said and if that doesn't work you will have to pull the shifter and cover and take it out of gear by hand and then look good to see why it popped out of gear. Worn parts will cause that and they may need some TLC or it can/will happen again

souNdguy is trying to tell you something important. You want to try to match the shifter position to the gear the tractor is actually in BEFORE you dismantle things.

So, you need to make your best guess as to which gear that is.

If the tractor is going pretty quick but is still controlable on rough ground to extent you think you could ''work'' in that gear, and you don't have to ''slip'' the clutch much to get it going from a dead halt, it is probably third.

If you have to give it a fair amount of throttle and slip the clutch quite a bit to get it going, and it is going so fast it doesn't feel safe except on a smooth surface like a road, it's probably in fourth.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
