Will someone confirm my thinking. Sunday afternoon
when I pushed the starter button on my 2N tractor
I heard a "zing" then tinkle, tinkle, tinkle. My
fears were confirmed when I removed the starter
and found the retaining ring had broken that holds
the "Bendix" assembly together, and since that
assembly is located on top of the flywheel, all those parts rained down inside the tractor, and
probably all over the transmission gears. I assume
to be safe, and not risk destroying the transmission, and/or hydraulic pump, I need to
remove the hood, steering column assembly including the shift assembly, so I can retrieve
these items, to # 1 re-use, and # 2 avoid them
destroying the tranmission, and hydraulic pump ???
I fished for two hours with a magnet, and only
managed to retrieve 1/2 the retaining ring ...
All input appreciated ..... .

By the way. The drive unit on your starter is the sane as the 37-40 Ford car 60hp v8 engine!

The transmsission and clutch are in separate housings. The pieces cannot get into your transmsission.

When I split my tractor last year to replace the worn out flywheel ring gear, I found parts like you're describing nestled firmly in the grease at the bottom of the case, out of harm's way.

I think about the only way those parts could cause you any damage would be if you're in the habit of driving the tractor upside down or doing motocross-style acrobatic jumps. Then they might come up to get chewed up by your clutch.

Rest easy.

Had the same thing happen about 3 years ago. Put the starter back and ran fine. I just split the tractor and in the bottom, out of harm's way were the parts. Rest easy on this one.

You might want to upgrade to a new ratchet starter drive rather than put the old one on, but either way you'll be okay.

There is no fluid in the clutch housing. (If your seals are good) I would not worry about it.. (What me worry?)
Happy Motoring
