Hey Guys,
We cleaned the block with a special cleaner known as "Barkeepers Helper" and the serial number came out clear as a bell. Problem is, our 9N tractor appears to have a 8N motor. Is this possible? The serial number is *8N33940*. The chart would indicate that this is a 1947 8N.
Three speed tranny...6 lug rear wheels...like a 9N. Could they have replaced the motor with one from a 8N? The tractor, by the way, is in fantastic shape. Please help.

Not uncommon in reply to Steve Sellers, 08-10-2007 13:19:16
Most of the tractor books about the Ford N series mention that a non-orginal engine is more the norm than not. Since the engines were interchangable, it was easier for a farmer to buy a rebuilt or new engine and put it in (swapping out the old one for the core charge) than to rebuild the existing engine (and have the tractor down while waiting for the engine to be finished). One fellow mentioned that his tractor had a Ford industrial engine block in it.

So, somwehere along the line, someone put a rebuilt engine in it. Farmers were not worried about "matching numbers" for a tractor show.

If you get a chance, read "Restoring the Indian" a great book about a guy restoring a 1948 Indian flathead. His engine rebuilder calls him on the phone, and says the engine is ready. The guys talks about the bike and says how it is too bad that the numbers (engine, frame) don't match. The rebuilder replies, "You wanted matching numbers? Why didn't you say so? I can do that for you!" It is not hard to mill off the number boss and stamp a new number in....

Makes you wonder about all those "matching numbers" Corvettes you see for sale...

FWIW.

You may have my engine!! I have an early-year "47 8N with a "43 2N engine. Engine number begins with 9N, but serial number indicates a "43 2N. From the photos listed on Smith"s 8N site, have determined that it is an early "47 8N chassis. At least something around here is older than me. Always wondered where that engine went.

My best guess would be the grocery store.

It is about the same thing as Comet, or Ajax cleaner.

Steve,

The engines were interchangeable, and it seems like it may have not been an uncommon practice to swap engines. The 8N engine would have had slightly improved HP over the 9N/2N.

My 8N has a 2N engine in it.
