I have just taken ownership of a 1947? 9N with a 8N motor. It's a 3 speed transmission. There is a small hole on the left side. My neighbour thinks it is a Sherman transmission. Should there be a handle or level protruding from this hole. I can thread a 3/8" bolt in but nothing happens if I push or pull. How is this suppose to work. I gather from reading the forums that this is for a high low range. This is my first tractor and will be mainly used to clear fallen trees from my property. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Rick

Red Rock has the handles. You must turn the shaft to engage the gears. Push in and forward for underdrive, in and back is overdrive. Between underdrive and overdrive is neutral. In neutral you pull the handle out and pull back for direct drive.

Sounds like a Combo to me. Good for you. Gives you 9 speeds forward and 3 reverse. Get a repop 'dogleg' handle from someone and bolt it onto the square shaft you see in the hole. Use a good quality lockwasher under the allenbolt's head or you'll lose the new handle as quick as the last owner.

HTH,

jim
