How do I tell if a mower is a finish mower or not? I've got a Covington mower that's somwhere around 60 years old. It's got a tail wheel. The blade center is probably a 2-3' disc and there are two cutting blades attached to the edge of the disc opposite each other.

Blade speed is considerable different too.

In general round numbers:

heavy brush cutter 10,000fpm

std brush & pasture weeds 14,000fpm

finish mower 16,500fpm

You have described a rotary cutter with a stump jumper. A finish mnower usually has three blades driven by a belt or two from a gearbox.

You have a "brush cutter, rough-cut mower, "Bush Hog" or whatever the commonly-used term is in your region.

A "finishing mower" will typically have multiple spindles (often 3), and just be a bigger, heavier version of the mower deck under your Gramma's Krapsman.
