Can"t get it to charge the battery. Had the generator checked at a shop, tested good. Bought the recommended voltage regulator and installed it, new wires, polarized the generator. checked everything, it still wont charge. I NEED HELP--PLEASE!!! Would anyone have a wiring diagram or description of how this genereator works. They tell me it is different from the Delco system we normally use.

Hey pappy - my 2N also drove me crazy with charging issues. I solved mine by getting rid of the cutout and replacing with an actual voltage regulator. Click on the link below for more info.

How do you know you got the correct reg, if you are not sure what genny you got.

Is it A circuit, or B circuit?

A circuit needs a grounded field tab, as the field is hooked to the armature internally.

B circuit needs a powered field tab as the field is grounded internally.

I suggest you remove the gen... ground the case, then hook power to the armature. Then take a meter and check between field and ground on a volt setting. if you get nothing it is B circuit.. if you get voltage it is A circuit.

To further test that.. if it is A circuit.. you should then be able to jumper field to ground and get the gen to motor. If it is B circuit.. you should be able to jump field to power and get the gen to motor..

Thanks to all of you! It is a 'B' Circuit, internally grounded. On our receipts for the tractor, it showed to be converted to 12 volt. WRONG!!!!! Everything was changed to 12 volt except the GENERATOR. We now have it charging, although it has to run pretty fast to start. Now, I think I will find a smaller pulley to spin the generator faster. At least, I found out how it works.

Sorry I forgot to clarify the situation. This is a 12 volt conversion. It has a 12 volt generator which looks like the 6 volt. It has a three terminal voltage regulator, A F B. The generator does check out at 12 volts in the shop. The old regularor was rusty and sad looking and I bought a new one for the Ford type of generator. Still nothing. Thanks!!

6v or 12v? And, what does the "voltage regulator" look like? Are you sure it's not a cut out? If you indeed have a 2N w/ a v/r, it's been 'farmerized'.

Pappy..... ..the original 1-wire 6-volt genny has a 3rd-brush "you-set-it" charge screw on the backplate. You do know that, don't you?..... ...respectfully, Dell
