47' 2N took all 5 gallons of 65-205 gear oil. but, it never made it up to the 6 o'clock bolt hole on the inspection cover.
is this unusual? it is maybe 3/8" shy.

When I change the oil in my '51 8N, it tooks the whole 5 gallons and didn't reach the bolt hole. I bought my fluid from Carquest, not NAPA. I also have the aftermarket flat dipstick and it registers smack dab in the middle of the full range. I haven't cleaned out my sump, and don't know what kinda shape it's in either. Hydraulics work well so not taking it apart any time soon!

Arthur----I had both inspection plates off of my 49 8N and cleaned out the sump real good with kerosene. I refilled with oil and it took the whole 5 gallons filling almost to the lower bolt whole.

My 51 8N, on the other hand was "cleaned" out by the previous owner (good enough but not that good)---only took about 4 1/2 gallons of the NAPA oil.

Maybe if the sumps are totally clean, they will take the full 5 gallons without any running out of the lower bolt hole---

If the system takes the 5 gallons, you are up to manufacturers specs, so I would not worry about it. If the system only takes a part of the 5 gallon bucket, and reaches the lower bolt hole or close to it, that would be good enough for me and you won"t have to worry about not having enough oil in the system.

This would be like being a 1/2 quart low on engine oil--not full, but enough so your engine will not be damaged.

Tim

I had the same problem. When I first got my 2n last jan. I bought some oil at TSC, put in all 5 gal. Then read about the bottom bolt. I removed and let it drain till it stopped. I was sceptical about the kind I used, so I bought five gal. at Napa 65-205. drained the old, and removed the bottom bolt and poured in all 5 gal. of the Napa. No oil came out of the bottom bolt. Tractor sitting on my garage floor (level) It was up on my dipstick, right now cant remember where. So since you have the same problem, did we get a full five gal. of oil? I didnt really pay much attention at the time, the bucket was white. Just a thought.

well we had to change the left axle seal since it sprung a vigorous leak all at once. took the old sure seal off and put a new one on. someone had 5 homemade galvenized shims smothered in silicone between the left axle housing and the dust cover. we dry fit two and the two felt gaskets and it seems fine with no movement on the hub. so we sealed the gaskets and shims on both sides and put her together. then we changed out the watery oil. it still has the light howl but i am not worried about it. the axle end had no rubbing on it from the other side either.
still don't know why they had 5 shims on the left side and only 2 on the right side though. that is a big difference.

There are a lot of myths being regularly circulated, but the bottom bolt hole oil level one is harmless. With an original dipstick inserted you will find the "full" mark on the dipstick lines up exactly with the bottom of the lower bolt hole. So, your oil level will be exactly the same whether you use the dipstick mark or pull out the bottom bolt. However, on aftermarket flat dipsticks the full mark can be found stamped just about anywhere.

well the dip stick cap is broken(need new one)but if you hold it together like it should be it is about 3/8" short of someones line that they scratched on to it.

maybe he can tip the bucket tomorrow and get another pint out of it.

guess i could put my 8n dipper in there and double check it.
