My 8n smokes some, and I'm noticing that the oil level is not staying up as I thought it would. But I keep filling it, but cars sure don't take this much...Anyway, it runs at 25 or so lbs of pressure. Is that ok?

I am running 20w oil. I did a compression check and 3 cyls were 85 or so, and one was 70. I suspect that 1 is the problem. I may run a heavier oil...

25 at normal operating temps tonight, 75 degrees, I was disking. Tues night I noticed it was 45 at first, then dropped to 30/25.

It's blue smoke. I added a quart Tues, and tonight also...

What weight oil do you use in it?? If your using a muti grade oil you might want to switch to a 30W or 40W or even a 50W which will slow down the burning/smoke. Muti weight oils when cold are thin and when warm act like a thicker oil but are still really just a thin oil with additives to make them act like a thicker oil.

If the engine is at operating temp (which usually takes 10 - 15 minutes) 25 lbs of oil pressure at 1/2 throttle is ok. The real test is when the engine is hot & at idle. 5 lbs is the usual minimum most folks will live with.

Yea, blue smoke usually means burning oil. If you check your plugs, they will likely be black.

You can buy a lot of oil before you equal the cost of new rings!

If you want to get an idea of just how worn the engine is, you will need to do a compression test.

25 lbs when the engine is hot & at idle? Or at 1/2 throttle? Or when it's cold? Makes a big difference!

Oil can leak out as well as burn. One of my N's leaks so bad I hate to put it in the garage; it sat for 2 - 3 years before I bought it & the seals dried out. But it does not burn a drop.

So, is it leaking oil? What color are your spark plugs? And, what color is the smoke? And finally, how much oil are you adding? A quart every 2 or 3 hours of operation? More? Less?

i agree, oil is cheaper. but a new engine makes you feel good.
you could try thicker oil and live with that also.
as long as you have good power then i would save for a future build.

i just went thru it and almost wish i would have kept buying oil instead of a rebuild.
