Another Myth...

Folks,

I have a Myth to add: "...soaking pistons with ATF will free stuck rings..." I'm working on an 851. I've got the head off for valve work. Seeing where I had a half gallon of ATF left over from another project, I figgured what the heck, lets soak those rings. I put a cup or so directly on the pistons for WEEKS, replenishing the ATF as needed. Now that I've yanked the pistons, it turns out the rings were absolutely unphased by the ATF - and were solidly stuck in the grooves. I had to use a center punch to drive out bits of the rings. Honestly, I should have saved the ATF for the next project. Your milage may vary!

Best regards

Ray

its that happy weed that makes them do that we had a pot head do the same thing to a '47 ford pickup that he had, it was brushpainted maroon, it looked better in the shop after he used atf on the entire truck, he went home that nite in it [ he lived on a dirt road] the next day you should have seen that thing! looked like a rolling dust bunny he wound up washing the truck with gasoline, then it looked even worse than it did before the atf, i still laugh when i think about that guy

But Marvel Mystery Oil Will work if the rust isn't so tight that it can't penetrate. Had it work about 75% of the time.

I agree with Ray and Bob. ATF is a good transmission fluid but not the best choice for use as a penetrant or solvent.

There is a difference between stuck rings and an engine rusted and siezed beyond saving without a total rebuild. ATF works great to free up the rings in an engine, so long as the engine isn't already a boat anchor.

Ray, I agree with you 100%. I've never seen ATF loosen up ANYHING that was at all stuck.

I keep it in my trannies, where it belongs.

I agree with Gaspump and Old. it's not a myth.. but it does have limits of application. in your case.. rust bonded / siezed rings were beyond liquid help. In many 'mild cases.. you just need soemthing to lube and solvate some gunk till things free up.. ATF won't help in situations where a wrench is needed...

IE.. use it as a first try.. if it don't work.. grab the wrench...

When they get like it's past the rust stage, thats into bonding of dissimilar metals. I don't feel that any rust cutter is the best answer for stuck rings. Next time you might use 50% ATF-50% Kerosene, works better. I used this mix for years in offshore construction but be careful using it, ATF is hot. This brings up another point, ATF in engines, what parts will it damage?

Some times the ATF works some time it doesn't but in an engine that will run and has stuck rings the reason it works is because first off it lubes the ring then running it gets the engine hot and the 2 thing work togeather to pop the rings loose. But like any thing you use one time it may work and the next time it will not depends on how bad things are stuck and why they where stuck in the first place. I have a piston sitting in tranny fluid right now that has stuck rings and yep they haven't popped free yet but this engine was also full of water and had been for years
