We just replaced the inner seals (sure seals) on our 2N and it is no problem. Removing the outer seals requires removing the retainer ring, bearing and replacing the seal, bearing and retainer ring. removing the bearing looks to be a real job. Anyway, we devised a seal installer that worked perfectly on the sure seals. Used a 30 inch piece of 3" PVC Pipe. Placed it over the axle against the seal, laid a block of wood on the pipe and tapped it with a 2 pound hammer lightlty to start the seal. Then, it went in straight and true. It is a great help if you bevel the outer edge of the seal to get it to start easier. (This advice I got from this site, but can't remember who sent it.)

Why not use Sure Seals the that way you won't have to do all that?

Do a search of smith's 8n and go to their site. They have detailed instructions on replacing axle seals.

ok folks, the wheel was leaking so we removed the axle. found a sure seal already on there but replaced it anyway. put it all together and the next day the old black oil that was already in the hub leaked all over the cleaned brakes, etc.
so he wants to know if there is any easy way to get at that outter seal.
btw, we put a new sure seal on and the new napa gear oil is light green with no evidence of that leaking.
