Soak it good with penetrating oil, let it sit a while, the take a punch and hammer and tap on each end GENTLY at first, then gradually hit harder if necessary. That how I got one of mine out that was stuck. The other side came out no problem

does the key have to come out to knock the spindle out? or can you just keep knocking it through with the key in and then take the key out.I thought that the key was just for keeping it in place from side to side?

The spindle will not come out without first removing the key. It will most likely come out if you knock the spindle down against the housing, but you might also damage the key in the process. It is a pretty snug fit for the key into the spindle arm. If you flatten the bottom of the key while pounding it may not fit back in the spindle arm channel. Your call. You could also take a length of pipe and put the lip of the pipe between the key and the spindle and hit it the other end of the pipe with a BFH at a slight angle. Should pop out.
