1 cyl smoking-what should I do?

1948 8N, 3 cyls compress. test at 85lbs, one at 70. Is it feasible to do a ring job or sleeve on one cyl, or should I do all? Is there a place that outlines how to do this?

If you just block up the tractor at the transmission, remove the hood/tank, pull the lower hose to dump the coolant, unbolt the front axle (leaving the steering and radius-rods connected, you can pull the axle forward allowing the front wheels to "pigeon-toe" inward...) ... in other words don't really completely disassemble the thing....

... Then you can get this single-cylinder rebuild-job done in less than 6 hours and be back in the field. You can do all 4 of them in 8 hours.

Re-doing only one cylinder will NOT break a crankshaft.
But you will be doing a lot of work that might as well take in the others as well. At the very least re-ring the other cylinders, even if you don't change the other sleeves/pistons/bearings. (To resleeve/repiston/rering one cylinder you'll have to remove the head and sump, and there's just not much more to redoing the other three while you're at it,... except for the cost of parts. But there's certainly nothing wrong with doing only one cylinder/piston/rings if the rest are fine and you're trying to save money.)

Ok. How long does it take to redo the sleeves/rings? Does the entire motor have to come out or can you just remove the hood/gas tank, and then the oil pan?

And to answer your question about how long it will take to get the sleeves and pistons in, it shouldn't take much more than a weekend to get the motor buttoned up and probiably another day to get the tractor completely back together and going. A few years back I rebuilt the motor in the 8N my grandfather had. By myself, I had the motor outta the tractor in about 3-4 hours and had the motor completely torn down in about another 3-4 hours. The sleeves depending are the worst part of it. You need the right puller to get em out, particularly if you have the .090 iron sleeves. I had the entire motor back together including checking things like ring gaps, rod and main clearances, ect ect in about 2 days. It's actually not too bad. If all your going to have to do is pistons and sleeves and leave everything else alone, you could get the motor back together in a day and get the tractor back together in a day.

I'm gonna ask what your engine oil pressure looks like. If it is on the low side it probiably isn't a bad idea to just pull the whole motor. If your oil pressure is ok, you can probiably just resleeve it and be on your way. Honestly, it only takes about another 30 minutes of work to pull the entire motor vs doing the sleeves and pistons in the tractor. If you have never worked on a N get yourself a FO-4 manual and study up alittle. By yourself doing it the first time you should be able to get the whole tractor tore down on a Saturday or Sunday if you have any mechanical capability at all. Remember alot of the farmers replaced horses with these machines and the folks at Ford knew this. Thus the KISS principle is in full effect on these machines.

Don't know about the sleeves but just to put in new rings you can pretty much do that in a day or less. You do need to pull the front end off the tractor to be able to drop the pan. Myself I can have the engine out of a tractor like the N seires in less then 2 hours

Never good to do just one cylinder because then you have an unbalanced engine and that can casue the crank shaft to brake. If you put in new rings do them all or don't do them at all. Plus ring sets are sold as a complete job and finding just one cylinder worth can be hard to do
