Hope someone can help me-I have a 2n Ford tractor that I am running on a 8 volt battery. I need to know what voltage I should have at the coil.

That tractor should have a 6v battery, and oem coil, and ballast resistor.

If for some reason someone has talked you into an 8v battery and turning your 3rd brush up to charge it a bit.. then IF it were me.. I'd drop in a 12v square coil vs the 6v coil..

In any case.. it probably stalls on bumpy ground due to bad connection of the coil to the distrib. Do you have the gasket in there and is the bail holding it all tight / pigtail spring stretched?

When I'm running on bumpy ground the tractor will die out. When I check I get varied readings from 1.9 to 7. It will not start untill I have low reading. Is this a bad resitor?

Anton..... ...on of the BIGGEST drawbacks to the "8-volt" battery swap is yer genny is just 6-volts. While the 1-wire 3rd-brush 6-volt genny can be turned up to MAX volts, it may or may-NOT be sufficient to keep an 8-volt battery charged.

Would it surprize you to learn that yer 1.9 volt reading is TOO LOW and that causes WEAK SPARKIES. Recommended coil volts is 2.5-3.0 volts. And you wonder iff'n you have a bad resistor??? Maybe. You definitely have some un-accounted extra resistance causing the 1.9-volts reading. You also get the 1.9-volt reading because yer points are closed and you are completing the circuit. (Elect 101)

And about yer 7-volt reading, that is when yer points are OPEN and tells me yer 8-volt battery is DISCHARGED because yer 6-volt genny can't charge an 8-volt battery. Isn't that amazing???

Me? I'd guess the extra resistance is in the contacts of yer weaksister ignition switch. $10 (cheap) I'll bettcha iff'n you replace yer weaksister ignition switch, you won't need an 8-volt crutch..... ...respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
