Ammeter wired up wrong?

I have been looking at the circuit diagram for the 8N and I have a feeling that my ammeter is wired up incorrectly. This is a 6 volt system. I have a wire which runs up to the ammeter from the battery side of the solenoid - then wires from the other side of the ammeter to regulator, lights etc. The ammeter is working and needle points to right when you look at the face of the ammeter and is showing about 9-10 volts? Bit hard to see as it is jiggling around. My stupid question of the day is - how does the battery get charged? Is it because there is more than 6volts it goes back down to the wire leading to the solenoid/battery and reverses the current? There are no other wires to the battery.

I will check with my meter tomorrow to see if the battery is getting more than 6 volts at the posts but was interested to know how it got charged.

Not such a stupid question...Short answer.. Yes! The direction of current that will flow between Two Points depends on which point is MORE negative, or MORE positive.
Note: The frame of the tractor is "just" a common WIRE...

Thanks!

I think I am going to pull the genny and give it an overhaul anyway - when I first started it up it made a strange noise for a few minutes then settled down - the ammeter does indeed read less after a few minutes so I feel better now that it is working.

Your 6 volt system is a lot like a water supply. Battery is the water tower (amount of water = amout of charge in battery) Amps is a measurement of current flow (compares to gallons per min. of water when you fill the water tower or empty it) Voltage is compared to water pressure which is how high the water tower is. Now the bottom line is you can have pressure with no water flow and you can have voltage with no current flow (amps) This is what your ampmeter on your dash measures - it is not like the voltmeters on some of the newer vehicles.

Ditto what Dell said.

What you described sounds standard.

batter on one side of ammeter, and the generator and all electrical loads on the other side of the ammeter..

Lee..... ..you write..... ."The ammeter is working and needle points to right when you look at the face of the ammeter and is showing about 9-10 volts?"..... .you do know your ammeter measure AMPS NOT VOLTS, don't you???

Would you believe yer ammeter is measuring the CHARGE into yer battery right now??? And you are quoting a charge of 9-10 AMPS!!! This is kinda high but semi-normal for right after you start yer engine and are replacing the 150-amps yer starter drained from the battery. Isn't that amazing???

After about 15-mins of battery re-charge, yer ammeter should be reading about 5-amps of battery maintenance charge. This is all explained in yer N-Owners Manual. $7 (cheap)

Iff'n yer ammeter reading is bouncing around like you claim, its probably time to REPLACE yer brushes. $5 (cheap)..... ...Dell
