My wife and I are considering upgrading my Buick to a Tahoe/Yukon or Expedition or Durango. Our family is growing and we just need more space. Other than the occasional trip to the lake with the speed boat (3,000 #) and the landscape trailer loaded with lumber, trash, or furniture we won’t use this vehicle for anything particularly grueling. Mostly trips to the supermarket.
I can’t afford a Toyota, and the above mentioned vehicles are less $ for similar equipment in our area.
Since most of you have experience with cars in addition to our beloved N’s I figured I’d ask for advice.
I’ve worked on the Tahoes and Expeditions some (friend’s cars) but have never worked on a Durango. How do they compare? Are they well built? I know they are a bit smaller, but they still seat 8… How long will a well maintained Durango go? Are there any weak points to look out for?
Thanks for any and all input.

I'm another for the Ford Expedition! Won't go into all the bragging and all that stuff. Lets just say they have proved themselves with us (we have an 06) and all who I've known that have owned one. Ford also has extended there warranty also to I think 6/60 in '07

We've really enjoyed our Expedition since we got it in '04. I'd have another one when it's time to trade.

I have had several Tahoes, Yukons and Expeditions starting with the inception of the Tahoe in 1995. I too have had close access to Toyotas, Nissans and the Lexus. I have seen no superior qualities in any of the foreign makes. The GM's and Fords are in my estimation are way superior and if you wish to get real yuppie, take a look at the Cadillac Escalades, they are the very tops in quality. Dodge is just too small for me so I haven't driven it. All my GM's and Fords gave me 19 to 20 MPG and 13-15 towing loads such as my tractors. My current Yukon has delivered 20.3 overall MPG for the entire 17,000 miles driven to date. Americans need to wake up and buy American, stop sending your dollars overseas!

I have an Expedition and a Sequoia. While the Expy is nice, it can't compare with the Toyota in terms of overall quality. That said, the Expy has been a pretty good vehicle but has required some pretty costly maintenance (tranny, AC hose, ball joints, etc.) in its 130K miles. I have to admit that I drive it hard, but also maintain it well.

As for the Dodge, you couldn't pay me to drive one of those things. Nearly everyone I know who's owned anything made by chrysler regrets ever buying it. In fact, a buddy had a 2000 pick up that needed two trannys and three rearends in 150k miles and all he did was commute to work in it.

Tahoes and Suburbans are popular around here and seem to be decent vehicles, but still not nearly as sound as the "imports."

I believe the Chrysler lifetime warranty is actually for the first or second owners, and is non-transferrable after that if beyond the basic 3/36. There may be a time/mileage limit on the transfer from owner 1 to owner 2, I don't recall.

No question, Chrysler is counting on lease deals (where owners only keep the vehicle for a few years) and buyers who trade often. And that really IS the description of most people who visit the dealership these days.

No, it ain't gonna break 'em. There may be other factors (factors that'll hit GM and Ford as well, like pensions and health insurance), but I doubt that the lifetime warranty issue will be the big one.

Anyway, on the 250,000+ cumulative miles on the 3 Chrysler vehicles I've bought new and were/are covered under warranty (99 Durango, 01 300M, 03 Ram 2500), I've had exactly zero claims on the powertrain. And on my commuter car (95 Intrepid), I have 110,000 miles with-again-no powertrain problems at all, and I bought this one used. And before all that, 230+K on an 89 Dakota whose only driveline problem was a differential failure due to my failure to catch the loose cover bolts, which caused an oil leak and subsequent oil starvation.

But I say again, buy the car that feels right to you; I contend that you likely won't go wrong with any thing they make nowadays. Sure, you can get a lemon in any bunch but on the whole, everyone makes a darn good vehicle. It boils down to personal preference for the vehicle and the dealership. And remember, just 'cause you buy a car from one dealer, don't mean you have to take it back there for service, so even the dealership experience shouldn't sway you too much (unless, of course, there are no other dealers in your area).

I'm a Ford man, so that is my vote. Had and Expedition and loved it. I would base my decision on which dealer has the best service reputation in your area. BTW, I think the new Chrysler lifetime warrenty is only for the original owner. Chrysler knows most people trade every two to three years anyway, so they will not be on the hook very long. My 2c.

One thing for sure if I wanted a Chrysler product I would buy one BUT I would not fall for the lifetime warranty advertisement. The 7/70 deal 'bout broke'em up. Even if its a true L/T deal the dealer does not have the manpower to handle the repairs once they start coming back to'em. No manufacture has the manpower to do warranty repairs with out some customer pay. If I were a mechanic at a Chrysler dealership I would B look'n for another job cuzz somebody gonna git the short end of the stick and it would not B me.
Theirs a catch to the L/T warranty, I would bet the scheduled maintenance policy will eat ya alive.

I bought a used 1998 Ford Expedition with 70K miles 3 years ago and have put about 30K more miles on it. Mostly just use it on weekends and vacations. Uses too much gas to use for my daily commute to work (40 miles each way).

It is a pleasure to drive however! Especially if we have the the kids and maybe a dog along too. Lots of room. I have not had any breakdown issues, just normal maintenance items.

I love it!

Profits from Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans, Kias, Hyundais, all that stuff made from compressed rice hulls....EVEN IF PUT TOGETHER IN THE U.S.... the profits still go overseas!
NOT for me and my family! (And your piddlin' little 140K miles is nothing to brag about. MY U.S. built Jeep six cylinder (92 Cherokee) is still truckin' at 308,000 miles with no major work and not burning oil! (Water pump and two sets of spark plugs/wires is all that's been done besides oil changes, tires, brakes.)

foreign stuff???? FOOOEEY!

Thanks everyone who responded. I'm not too familiar with Dodge and just didn't want to buy a Yugo quality vehicle without knowing about it ahead of time third party image

I appreciate all the feedback!

I'm a Mopar guy through and through; it's all I have in my yard. If I were in the market for a new vehicle, I'd look pretty hard at the Dodge or Jeep because of that new lifetime powertrain warranty, if for no other reason.

That said, while I would lean toward the Durango myself, I doubt you'd go wrong with any new vehicle available these days, "ferren" or "domestic". It all boils down to personal preferences, the way the car fits you, the features you like. Go out, tease a few dealers, drive 'em all and see what you like best about each.

Too Tall, you say you can't afford a Toyota? Just remember, you will pay, one way or another. In original cost, or repair and down time. My 1998 Toyota 4WD, 4Cyl. has 140,000+ miles on it. Starter was replaced ata about 135,000. Just put the second set of tires on it other than the ones that came on it. The only down time I have had was when a Cat D-6 dozer backed in the road in front of me at approx. 17,000 miles. Check Consumer Reports Buying Guide at your public library on all models and satisfaction of buyers. Like the commercial says, "Pay me now or pay me later! Your choice.

My GMC pickup is the best pickup I've owned or driven, and that has been a bunch. I will buy another when the time comes. Won't have a Ford, don't like their politics. The Dodge with lifetime power train warranty looks interesting though...

You may want to do some internet research on the Durango's front suspension. I seem to recall reading or hearing about a problem they had with needing ball joints(?) replaced at 70k miles or so. I don't quite remember.

We have a '98 Yukon and have been pleased with it. It had the 5.7 liter (350) V8. It has 128k on it now and has had 2 water pumps and trans rebuild. Luckily, all was warranty covered. We use it for vacations and in winter when the roads are bad. I can't speak for the Ford SUVs cuz I've never even rode in one rather off owned one. Nobody I associate with has one, but a former aquaintance had an Explorer, or rather "Exploder" as he called it. He had a Maaco/Earl Scheib paint job put on it and couldn't wait to sell it. I don't know the reason why he wanted to get rid of it - I never asked or cared.

I don't believe the Durango is in the same league is it? Isn't it based on the Dakota where the others are based on the full size trucks? There is probably a big difference between the Dakota and full size suv's you refer to in the Ford and Chevrolet line. The Durango is probably about the same as a Trailblazer or Explorer.

We had an expedition at work, as well as my ykon.. I like ford products a WHOLE lot better than GMC products... My ykon had a few failures i feel were design issues.. as well as a few nagging leaks.. but it is otherwise a solid vehicle. The expedition never gave us any troubles.. much like our f150/f250's.. etc.. Compaired to our chevy silvarado's which always had small iritating issues.. though nothing major..
