A few weeks ago I posted a message looking for suggestions on where all my oil was going (1948 8n). This weekend I discovered the leak....from the govenor. It seems to be leaking right around the screws that hold the gov cap on. There appears to be a gasket where the gov cap and the gov come together. I would like to replace, but I am looking for advice before unbolting the gov cap. Can the gasket be swapped without messing with the actual inner workings of the gov? I did not see a gasket in the exploded view of the IT manual, should there be a gasket? Is it common to have oil leaks here? I would be grateful for any help - oh yeah, the leak is fairly consistent once the tractor is running.

Howdy, the 'sand it flat' suggestion is very good, but, I recomend that you use 120 grit wet/dry sandpaper with 'cutting oil' on a peice of glass....takes a little longer, but the results will be more gooder. HaH !

Thanks to all - I did try to tighten it down and - as 8n'er said - I think I wrenched a bit too hard - as the leak seemed to worsen somewhat (or maybe it was now that I know where the leak was coming from???). Anyway - with the understanding that the gov guts won't spill out and I can sand the gov surface I will take a crack at it next weekend. Any other advise would be appreicated.

When you remove the housing, you will have to remove 1 screw that holds the "complete" governor centrifugal assembly (guts) in the housing.--see picture.

If it is not broken anywhere, the guts come out as one unit and is very easy to remove/replace in the housing.

You can then sand the governor housing as needed.

Anvilhead---the governor housing is made out of soft aluminum. It is very common to find a lot of the governor housings are "warped" from over zealous tightening of the 2 bolts when trying to fix "leaking governors".

When you get your governor off, take a straight edge and move it along the surface of the housing where it meets the engine. If there is any warping, it will be noticeable.

To fix it, just get some 80 grit sandpaper and put the sandpaper on a flat surface (work bench, concrete floor, etc.) and with a circular motion you can straighten out the governor housing in a few minutes. When the surface of the housing being sanded is all shiny, you will have a nice fit to the engine housing.

Follow the gasket, permatex sealer that has already been recommended and you will be able to stop the leaks---HTH

On my 2N I also noticed a leak at the governor - I ordered a new gasket, and unbolted the govertor. It came right off. Problem; there were already 2 gaskets in place. Upon closer examination, it looks like there are cracks in the cover along the casting lines. I still have a leak. When I decide to do the rebuild, I will replace the cover.

The governor comes off in one piece, without the guts spilling out.

Just be sure to put the long and short bolts back in the proper locations.

Clean up the surfaces, and use silicone gasket sealant sparingly on the mating surfaces.
