I have seen a brush hog/mower on e bay for a sensible price new - it requires a 540 rpm pto speed - will my old 8N be able to produce this?

Lee..... ...YES, yer 8N will produce about 540rpms PTO at about 3/4 throttle in enny gear. Its the way the tranny works. 540rpms is standard PTO specs and was really set by the old fashoned BELT DRIVEN corn and wheat steam threshers. The 6" wide flat belt couldn't be tightened tighter or go faster without slipping. There are some modern PTO driven implements that require 1000rpm PTO speed. Yer 8N can NOT produce 1000rpms PTO..... ...Dell

Yes , but be sure to install a ORC or you'll find yourself in serious trouble when it comes to stopping . Always use safety when using one . Keep others away from the area you're mowing & don't let anyone ride on the tractor with you when mowing . Be safe & God bless, Ken

Er, what is an ORC?

I am sure these things can throw a rock or large chunk of wood with some velocity so will be very careful about that.
I will indeed take care - trying to get back on a moving tractor with a brush hog behind would be pretty scary!!!!third party image

Over Running Clutch. It's a device you slip onto your PTO shaft which passes power to the mower/shredder but which will allow the mower to spin without driving the tractor. (If you disengage the clutch on an N-Ford the mower's momentum will continue to drive the rear wheels of the tractor for quite some time, thereby preventing a rapid stop. Stories abound of fellows up against a tree, in a ditch, etc. because they did not use an ORC.)

About $35. Well worth the money.

Re: Marine Kill switch: Might make some one feel warm and fuzzy, but I don't think I'll do that one. Not likely to help you. You'll still be killed by the mower. It will help your loved-one remove your bloody mass of pulp from a non-moving mower.
To be fair however, ....I bought a kill-switch for my boat and never installed it.

Just to be really safe I'd invest the money in an 8N ejection seat. In event of rollover or other similar event it will safely eject you off the tractor.

Just kidding. I drove an 8N with 5 foot mower from the time I was 8 years old till just recently (I'm almost 50) without an ORC. Have one now and it's Ok but I always found the best thing is just to be careful. Best advice my dear old dad ever gave me was "if it feels unsafe, it probably is."

I would add an ignition cutoff switch.A line is attached to your clothing that kills the ignition if a branch sweeps you off the tractor. This does happen more often than you think.Switches cost about 10.00 at marine supply stores.Lobstermen use them when pulling traps.

Now come on , don't scare the guy so bad . That device is a little over kill in my book . Just use safety , do watch for low hanging branches that could knock you off kilter tho . Brush Hogs are use all the time with the ORC connected on these old Ns . Just stay alert . God bless, Ken

Yes, at about 3/4 throttle.
