47 2N left axle started leaking. replaced the sure seal that was already on there. put all shims back in place after coating them with permatex. everything back together tight and it still leaks. the leak is coming from inside the drum.

any ideas guys?

the shims that were installed by previous owner had them between the axle housing and the brake dust cover.

Did you clean all the oil and gunk out of the drum? Did you sand/clean the area where the Sure Seal seals around the axle? Shouldn't leak. No problem with mine.

yes, all the drum was cleaned with brake clean. completely cleaned. i wonder if the axle could be worn where the seal sits but i don't see how. it is the new oil that is leaking and not the old black crap. so it has to be getting by the new sure seal. speaking of which, why the last sure seal be leaking anyway?

Arthur..... ..don't OVERFILL yer hydro-tranny oil. While official specifications for hydro-tranny oil is 5-gals, yer tractor will live quite nicely with 4-3/4gals. Tip: remove the 6-o'clock bottom bolt of yer tranny dipstick round plate and let it DRAIN overnite down the side of yer tranny. That is usually the best hydro-tranny oil level, not yer dipstick full mark..... ...Dell

hi dell
the oil was drained overnight. after that the seal was replaced. took all 5 gallons of new napa oil.
never did reach the 6 oclock bolt hole. it was about 3/8" shy.
