Is it possible to stop the governor from leaking oil? Everything seems tight. Usually after using it, it drops when it"s parked. Also, I have an oil leak from the underbelly where the cotter pin sticks out. How can I stop that leak?

Chances are the governor is not leaking out where it bolts to the block. It is probably leaking out of the little seal on the side of the unit. You have to take the governor off, dissassemble it, and put a new seal on the shaft that moves back and forth. It is a small seal about 1/2 inch in diameter with about a 1/4 inch shaft hole in the middle of it. You can get one at a ford tractor dealer. I changed one a few years ago and it was a pretty straightforward process. Only took around an hour and no more leaks. I did it for my neighbor on his 9n.

Phillip..... ...both of your questions are very common and have been answered many times, you might want to check the "archives" at the top of this great N-Board for more fully explained fixx'ems.

The governor aluminum housing lips WARP from EXCESSIVE tightning. Remove 2-bolts, SHORT BOLT on top, and "sand" housing on FLAT surface in "figger-8's" scheme to keep it level as you remove the bumps around the bolt holes.

The hi-tech danglin' cotterkey, is Ford's secret trick to keep dirt from cloggin' the NECESSARY clutch housing drain holes. There are 2-sources of oilleaks. The engine crankshaft rearseal behind the flywheel....OR....the most likely leak, the tranny mainseal $3, (cheap). Most of the time, the tranny mainseal leaks 'cuz you OVERFILL the tranny-hydro oil. Overfilled tranny-hydro oil will also slop out yer rearaxle seals and greeze yer brakeshoes. NOT GOOD.

To check and set the correct level of yer 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil, remove the 6-o'clock bottom bolt of the round tranny oil dipstick and letter drain down the outside of yer tranny overnite.

Neither clutch housing oilleaks are dangerous, but to the fastidious, oilleaks are no-no. Me? Iff'n it bothers you, use some bailin' wire and wire some tunafish cans under yer drippers, simple, eh?..... ...respectfully, Dell

Hey Dell,

Gotta level with you. The leak on the underbelly has been kinda dealt with already. I never thought of using a tuna fish can, but I've used a wadded up shop rag tied around with a nylon string. Thanks for your input.

There is more than one way to skin a cat. In my case, I used Black RTV sealant when I couldn't get my Gov to stop leaking. I discarded the gasket and run a small bead around the gasket area and let it sit over night before intsalling it on the tractor. It has been leak free for over a year.

Good Luck, Brian
