8N hood - should it tip up?

Should the hood/gas tank on my 8N tilt up pivoting on the front bolts below the radiator if I diconnect the fuel line?

I dont want to have to remove the whole thing each time I need access to the engine - want to do a compression test but there is not enough room to get the gague in there.

Most of the time I dont have anyone to help me so it is almost impossible to lift it off when the fuel tank is full....or empty for that matter!!!

I made a sling and lifted the hood off with an engine lift. That way you can also replace the hood nice and slow and save the paint.

For what its worth the hood on my 861 is worse than my 8n to remove, not one of Henry's better ideas..... .....

My hood was cut out when I got it and I always figured it was so the hood would tilt. I have a bumper so I have never tried it.

Hi,

This may not help much...but just to give ya hope.

A hay distributer on the Highway on my way home has an 8n.

Meny times I've seen it there with the hood tilted forward as you describe.

Looks kike there is plenty of room in there.

I have a front loader so it's a no go for me.

I think you saw a Fergusson TO-20. The profile looks exactly like an 8N, right down to the wheel bolt pattern. What is missing is a hole in the hood for a radiator cap.

The TO-20's had an operable hood, and the fuel tank was mounted on the engine, making the hood just a cover for all the parts below.

Smart design idea.

I have removed the hood by myself more than once. After everything is disconnected, waller it off from the right side. Be careful not to hang it up on anything in the process.

BTW, I am not Superman, either. I am 68 yoa, 5'9".

I do admit that having two people (or a sky hook) makes it easier.

I've had mine off and back on twice by myself, although many a compression test has been done with the hood in place. Neither problem is that hard to overcome.

I've removed and reinstalled the hood one time, and it was a bear. As Ed says, the steering wheel and radiator cap are very much in the way, so it won't just tip up. Basically it is a matter of draining fuel, disconnecting everything, then jiggle and cuss 'til it comes off. It almost certainly requires two people (although I saw a post once where a fellow claimed to have done it alone). Putting it back on is the reverse process.

So I'd say don't take it off unless you really have to.

Good luck!

Joe

Lee--you should be able to buy a flexible hose if your compression gauge allows for interchangeable hoses that will fit in real easy without having to take the hood off. I have one by Snap-on that works good.

In another post a few years back, someone suggested that you could buy a few plumbing elbows that would screw into the plug hole and provide easy access for your compression gauge without having to remove the hood.

I did my compression tests with a 90 degree brass elbow I got from the local plumbing supply store. I just brought in an old plug and the compression tester, and we matched it all up. I think I paid about $4.50 for the elbow because it was brass.
I'm not sure brass is necessary, but it made me feel better, as I figured that the brass would deform first in the event I got it cross threaded.

It worked for me without needing to remove the hood.

My 8N hood will not tilt, it hits the neck of the radiator.
Hope this helps,

TooTall

radiator neck (and possibly steering wheel) will get in the way

too bad there isn't a way to cut the hood in half just in front of the battery door and install hinges and lifters so that the front of the hood would lift up like a car hood....yea...too bad....(Zane - you listening?)
