Voltage regulator adjustment and genny overhaul tips

Fired up the old 8N this evening and noticed the ammeter not doing anything. Previously it had done this and then when I drove around for a bit it started showing a charge. This time I turned off power and did the batt alt short to make sure genny was polarized and started up again - nothing - so took off cover of voltage regulator and when I jiggled one side of the thing it then started working - I note there are two coils in there on has a contact (like points) the other has a metal tip which makes contact with the device below - this was the one which made it gen start charging again - my question is...this obviously needs some adjustment/cleaning as it is not making contact...OR is it making too much contact and remaining 'on' - I read in a previous post that this can be adjusted but should I adjust for a bigger gap or the other way?

I am planning on taking the generator off and giving it a good clean and overhaul....any suggestions tips or warnings about doing this?

Thanks,

Lee

Lee..... ...once the pivot points of the relays of the voltage regulator wear, the relay armature (moving part) tend to stick. And NO amount of adjusting can allow for worn pivots. Byte the bullet, NEW voltage regulator $30 (cheap)..... ....Dell

And when the cutout points stick, from wear or you mucking around with things best left alone, the battery will be drained into the generator after shutdown, "killing" the battery, and PROBABLY letting all the $moke out of the generator.

Can I get a voltage regulator like this via NAPA for 6 volt system?

Seems odd as the inside looks like it is brand new!

The contacts may simply be dirty.

Disconnect battery.

Clean contacts by drawing a piece of white cardstock though them several times.

Finish with a shot of electrical contact cleaner (with all points "open") and allow to air dry COMPLETELY. (The "field" contacts will be closed, and you'll need to prop them open while spraying the cleaner, and until it dries.)

Then, install the regulator cover BEFORE connecting the battery back up. (To prevent making a "short" if you accidently touch the metal cover against the "guts" while reinstalling it.)

The point I was trying to make is that it's NOT a good idea to remove the cover while the battery is connected, and a definite "no-no" to push the cutout points closed while it's powered up. That's when you'll let the smoke out!

(We won't go into how I know that, but I learned MANY years, a much smoke ago NOT to do those things!)
