9N Starting Problem

I Have a 9N that won't start. I have replaced everything in the electrial and starting systems. It will crank and there is juice to the coil but no fire at the plugs. Has anyone got any ideas? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Like others have said, the problem is in the distributor. You have about four likely possibilities.

First, remove the distributor & check for continuity inside it. It is very easy to ground the wire to the condenser when you replace the points. Next, check the point gap at .015 on all four lobes. Thirdly, check the rotor & cap, Finally, remove the cork gasket under the coil and reinstall the coil. Put a piece of folded paper under the coil bail to hold it tight. Reconnect the wire on the top of the coil. Try it like this and if it cranks and runs you will know the spring pigtail needs to be stretched or the other flat tab on the coil needs adjusting.

Did you set the point correctly?? They need to be set at .015. Also are you sure you didn't get something shorted out when you installed the new parts?? One thing you can try is pull the coil off and the cap off, then the rotor and dust cover. Turn on the key and reach in and open and close the points by hand. You should here a little snap when you open and close them if not you may need to clean the points because when new points can have a film of oil on them and that will keep them from working. Had that happen to me not long ago on my 9N and after I opened and close the pints like that a few times it now runs just fine, never did figure out why but it worked

try stretching the pig tail, and bend the metal tab connector on bottom of the coil out. they might not be makeing good contact with distributor. RP

if you have juice at the coil (how much points open/cllosed) (6volt/12volt?) and no spark, then something is happening in the distributor. On mt 2N, sometimes enough condensation will get inside that it shorts out. Try removing the coil and pointing a hair dryer at the opening above the distributor cap for about 60 seconds. Reassemble and try starting.

What does your dashboard ammeter say?

Turn on the ignition without cranking. You should see a static discharge of three amps or so.

No discharge? The points are not closing correctly, are not conducting properly, or there is an open somewhere else in the system, like the coil primary. (Likely it's the points.)

Normal discharge? Crank the engine with the ignition on. You should see the ammeter dip or flutter as the points open and close.

No dip or flutter? The points are not opening, are shorted, or there is a short elswhere in the system. (Again, the points are the chief suspect.)
