So, pulled the genny off the 8N - took it apart in a few minutes - the armature ? Was not clean and so I carefully scraped out the gaps in between the copper, used a nylon scrubbie to clean and some electromotive spray - then cleaned everything else as well as the brushes which were about 3/4 of an inch long if not a little more - where the end of the rotor seats there is a small oiling cap - however there was a copper bushing or something in there and I could not see how the oil gets in there as there was no hole all the way through..... I put in some white grease when I put it back together - sanded everything down and re-cleaned connection from coil (or whatever it is) to the brushes. Put it all back together and re-installed.

I carefully cleaned contacts in voltage regulator, sprayed them with electromotive spray and dried as well as very carefully sprayed some silicon lube on the tiny springs at the back.

Fired it up and lo and behold it works!!!! I guess the battery is well charged as ammeter was not showing a big deflection like it did before - will check with meter tomorrow to see how much is coming from genny.

There is not much to those generators so the maintenance I did is pretty easy.

There is nothing wrong with filing the contact points, the points file is inserted between the points and pressure is applied to both sides of the points such that both are filed at the same time. The result is that you have matching contact angles.

It is really satisfying to get something fixed up and working properly!

Earlier in the summer I had been struggling with the 3 brush generator on my 8N. The pulley stripped the armature while doing field work this spring. It posed a challenge as I had not yet gotten my head around the electrical system yet. Thanks to the good folks on the board I was able to figure it out.

Paul in MN gave me an 8n10000B, which is now repainted and on the tractor.
