Broken Easy Outs

I found that the previous owner of my Case 530CK had broken a bolt.. drilled hole (off center) and then broke an easy out. He then gave up and filed level and used some pucky....

I contemplated a difficult solution to the broken easy out (drill & insert) but then it occurred to me that they are very brittle. I used a center punch to hit the easy out (sideways) at its weakest point, the narrow flute. The easy out split lengthwise and it practically fell out.

Hope this helps some one,

I've never tried it on an easy out, but I have burned out a lot of bolts out of cast iron blocks and manifolds with a cutting torch. Just center the torch and pray a lot.

Yep.. I've chipped them out before.

Usually the cheaper ez outs are nice and hard.. but brittle.. unlike more spendy older ones that. while hard.. aren't as darn brittle.

In rare applications I've had to burnthem out to ruin their temper.. ( piercing nozzle on a torch help.. especially if it's a big ez out..)

small ones are a PITA!!

AH, Yes!! give me Luck over Skill any day!! You were, no doubt, LUCKY! EasyOuts should be illegal for most mechanics... I hate 'em and will go to great lengths to avoid using them.

Glad it worked out for you!! duey
