First time planting of peas. Only got about 10% germination. They weren't inoculated, just plain green dry from the local seed store. I think they might be old. Just for future reference, I'd like to know what to expect and where to get better seed for a large garden.

While on the subject, long long time ago far far..... I worked in the pea harvest. They mowed em and hauled em to viner machines where I worked pitching vines into the machine where they got everything separated.

Mother chided me about my job, "Bless you little pea picking herat". My response, "its pitchin ma, not pickin, its my little pea PITCHEN heart".

Peas don't look like much fun to harvest. Looking on the web all I see is shellers, for J6P.

Hobo and Dell,

Sorry to get back to this subject so late. Not that it matters too much, but they were out of seed when I checked back today.

Hobo, those are some nice rows, good and full. I suspect mine would have done better with a soak.

I still question how much work peas are at harvest, but they sure are tasty in their time.

Russ..... ..inoculation has 'nuttin' to do with yer 10% germination, but pre-sprouting does. Wett'em down towel or glass mason jar in warm DARK corner of hotwater heater closet. When you can see the root sprout about 1/4", plant'em. Simple, eh?

I do the same "pre-sprout" with all large seed veggies like corn, beans, pumpkin, squash. Why? 'cuz the faster the seeds take root, the less likely the BIRDS are gonna find the seed first. Itty bitty seeds like carrots, radishes, I plant extra and dry and then THIN. That is also the reason you usually plant in ROWS, 'cuz weeds don't grow in rows. Iff'n little plant ain't growin' innna row, ittza WEED!!!..... .pull-itt, hoe-itt, KILL-ITT!!!

Inoculation causes the pea roots to fix "nitrogen" into the soil. Generally, use lime, P & K and very little N in fertilizer..... ..Dell, with wilted green thumb

Dell, thanks for the illuminization, it adds to my edumication. Really, that presoaking reminder is something that rings true. Its about 3 weeks since I planted and they were probably on the late side. I will try the soak and replant as an experiment.
