how did you guys get into n"s. I know dell was into aircraft I was raised on a cotton farm nearly starved to death so went into the telephone business . I always like truck farming so I have a little land and retirement is just around the corner .so now i have 51 8n I enjoy reading and learning form you guys . we have 2nd crop of squash and corn ,peas now we have turnips and raddishs up .that 8n got her did, ha

Ahhh...My first and greatly influential exposure to the N was my Grandpa's 8N. My Grandpa was a small dairy farmer in Dauphin county Pa. and retired (although not entirely) in the late 60's.
Milked 5 or 6 Holsteins every day by hand all his life. He was so proud of his N! It never sat out; and I remember riding with him - he would even park it in the shade when working on the farm.
When he put it in the shed, he would cover it with an old quilt - didn't want the flys, spiders, sparrows, etc. making their mark! I remember getting on the tractor when I was very young; Grandpa would pull the quilt back. I distinctly remember the sound of the starter - they sure have their own sound don't they! He would let me sit on it and pretend I was driving. It was a great disappointment in my adult life when I learned it had been sold. I am working on locating it, last I know it was near Dalmatia Pa. My grandpa's name was David Neagley.

I was raised in a little Iowa town of 200 people, the first generation of my family in 350 years not born on the farm. The grade school janitor lived just up the block from us on a little acreage and he had an 8N. Everett used to give us kids rides and I decided then and there that someday I'd have one. Now I'm 60, retired and I do!

Most of how I got into N's is in the intro to my '50 tips' (below)

I've always had an old car or two around, so keeping old engines running was not a problem for me.....unlike new engines which I have difficulty understanding how they even operate, much less working on them.

My father & his two brothers were the first to leave the farm; I have family history going back to 1800 & they were always farmers. So, I guess it's genetic for me because I was not raised on a farm, but spent many a weekend & summers on family members farms as a kid. I've been growing my own veggies for nearly 40 years.

When the wife & I moved out to the country in 1999, I needed a tractor to keep up the 10 acres. When my wife said she wanted a raised bed garden for herbs, I used that as an excuse to get my second N w/ a Freeman loader. And, of course, a man always needs a 'back up' tractor, just in case one of the others breaks.

Grew up on a small dairy farm in upstate NY - first tractor after the horses got too old was a "Ford/Fergie" (2N I suppose). Then upgraded to an 8N and then to an 861, which we still have. I got Dad's old 8N back last year and put'im back to work down here in Ohio mowing grass, plowing & harrowing the garden and food plot, & pushing what little snow we get. Both my 8N's are still going strong - they don't make'em like they used to.

Does the NAA count as an N? I rode with my Grandpa raking hay (or any other job!) from about 2 years old on. Lucky enough to live right across the road from him. Maybe spoiled a bit, as he had 8 girls, but no boys. By the summer I turned 6, he let me rake while he took a nap, lying on a windrow. I wasn't allowed to drive on the road for a couple more years, but I was driving the 7000 running the baler by the time I was 9 or 10. Been at it ever since, full time for 14+ years (as soon as I graduated from tech school in '93), and still have the Jubilee.

When I first had a hankering for a tractor, I started spotting these little red and gray tractors here and there. I was chatting with a gent one day about wanting a tractor for the twelve acre place we had just moved to. He said the red and gray tractors were Ford 8Ns. One day I spotted what looked like a nice one on a lot in town. I told my bride about it and she said "Happy Birthday, Happy Father's Day, Happy Anniversary, and Merry Christmas..... for the next five years! Now go get it!"

And so I did. I brought home my little 52 8N. I mostly use it to mow our seven acre meadow but I worked it pretty hard this summer. I plowed up two acres around the house with the help of an old Ferguson two bottom plow I found. What a team! A 70 year old plow being pulled by a 55 year old tractor, driven by a 55 year old farmer wannabe.

After I let the newly plowed up weeds die off for a few weeks, I plowed it again, then borrowed a neighbors disc harrow and ran that over the two acres a couple of times, then pulled a big heavy slab of metal, weighed down with four heavy stone blocks to level and smooth the ground. Planted bermuda grass and, thanks to all the rain we've been having in Texas this summer, those two acres exploded into lush green grass in about three weeks.

Now, when the dew dries off this morning, I'm going to hop on her and spend a few hours mowing this morning.

Life is good.

CIty boy here; parents bought 12 acres "rural" Winder, GA when I was in Middle School (1970s) and we proceeded to build a house on it. Dad bought a '52 8N, brought it home in the bed of his F-100 and stripped it down for an engine rebuild and a little primer paint to patch up the worst of the rusty spots (as I remember, it had plenty of 'em). Sold the tractor after Dad got a job in Saudi Arabia - had my first major car wreck (hit by drunk driver) the same day.

Fast forward 35 years, and my family and I moved from GA to the Middle West on an old farm homestead with 15 acres around all the outbuildings, and the first piece of equipment I bought was the '50 frontmount 8N, which got a good workout for a couple of years before I decided to rebuild - it's still in a pile of pieces in the shed…
I'm currently using a borrowed '50 frontmount belonging to a friend from church. It was a non-runner, and he asked if I could get it going again, which I did. He just keeps forgetting to come get it, despite numerous reminders. One of these days, I'll need to get off my duff and get my N back together again.

Grew up in the 40's on a large farm in Nebraska. Dad used large John Deeres for plowing, etc, but we had an "N" for mowing and raking hay and pulling corn wagons, etc. Of cousre, that was "my" tractor so from about 11 until mid-teens, I had lots of seat time on it. Now have 20 acres in SC, plus some rented land, and my 51 8N with a 41 9N motor, get all the little jobs like mowing, puttering and pulling g-kids with the farm trailer. It's willed to my son, a SC State Trooper, who also has a small farm.

Well, I reckon I was "born into it". I can never remember a time the ol'N wasnt around, but obviously it was for a few months. (It is a 1951 model as far as I can tell!) I was born in 1950, if one can beleive my Birth Certificate. (I was too young to be able to remember, hehehe) Well, I still have the tractor, was running it yesterday & will probably be running it again as soon as the current Heat Wave passes. Tractor saw much use, but not much abuse, as Dad maintained his stuffs well. It has saved my life on multiple occasions, due to some of the CRAZY things I did (still do, hehehe) "Course, now I have had it for longer than DAD,(god rest his soul) but I don't rack up as many hours as it once was! Also converted it to 12v & did the dreaded electronic ignition conversion, (but saved all the stuffs so somebody can change it back if they want). Sometimes when I drive it, I feel the presence of Dad (& Mom, who also usta drive it!) & feel safe(r)!! It is in my will, so you know how much it means to me!! CC

My Dad's uncle bought an 8N back about 1950 to work a little 40 acre farm and so he could retire his old mare and the mule. I got to sit on his lap and steer it around the barnyard. Couple of years ago I bought a little piece of land and then the 8N to keep it in shape. There is nothing else quite like sitting in the seat getting the work done and listening to the tractor make its special noise.

Always lived in the city until 11 years ago. When we moved to the country I needed a tractor to grade my driveway and mow a few acres. First tractor was a 3 cylinder ford 2000. No longer own that one any more. Now have a 45 2N, a 49 and 51 8N and a 62 601.

I came from a large family & what we ate is what we grew . My Dad always had Ford tractors . I started driving at age 7 in the fields so I pretty much grew up on them . Love my Ford tractors (640 & 8n Funk conversion). God bless, Ken
