Jubilee won't start (Starter spins free)

I was using my 53 Golden Jubilee earlier today to move some paver stones and pea gravel. During loading/unloading I would turn off the engine to conserve fuel. All was well until about the 6th time I turned it off it wouldn't start up. Fuel delivery is fine (other than a drip at the sediment bowl) and the battery is fully charged. I have a 12V conversion (Delco 10si) and the voltmeter shows 12V when I turn the key to 'on'.

It sounds like the starter is spinning but not engaging. There is absolutely no sound of the engine cranking. How do I check this possibility? What else could be the cause?

TIA,

Paul.

NAA starter just pulls right out. Pull the bolts and wiggle that starter out and around the petcock, eyeball the bendix, or take it right to the starter shop and let them spin it and fix it for you. Might be a real good time to have them rebuild the starter and clean it up for paint.

It's also possible bendinx is stuck and not engaging flywheel.. pull it and make sure the shaft is squeaky clean ( no liquid or grease lubes )

Most likely Bendix gone, but may be a real bad spot on the flywheel ring gear -- try turning the engine over a bit and see if it'll work before you pull the starter. 12V should slam it (the Bendix) in, if it's there.

Bill,

I"ll try your suggestions tomorrow. Assuming it is the bendix, is this a repairable part of the starter? I am comfortable with engine repairs but have never dealt with repairing a starter.

Paul.

Yep, Bendix is replaceable after you pull starter (pull it back enough to put a nut on the end of one of the long bolts to hold it together while you mess with getting it out - (toughest part of the whole job)) - most suggest newer clutch type Bendix. Also if the old one (Bendix) has dropped off or disintegrated, it will be down in the bottom of the bell housing, which has enough room to store a couple of them forever, so don't worry about it. If you have trouble with this, come back here and lots of the good folks on here can help you - there are a few tricks to getting the starter in and out + installing a new Bendix.

Everythings cool except the 2 bolt / nut part... Ford apparently corrected the reverse polish starter design so that it don't fall completely apart in your hands while removing if you don't hop on 1 foot with your eyes closed while humming a polka tune.

I didn't have time to work on the tractor today. I'll get to it this weekend. I'll post my findings then.

Paul.
