Found this in the cavity under the steering box. Looks important.

I thought it was a rare Ford double helix bidirectional push-pull automatic reveser spring that Ford experimented with when they were trying to compete against the Essex tri-directional tractor recently discussed on one of these forums. After the Essex disappeared, Ford removed the springs secretly at night while the farmers slept - they must have misseed that one.

Nothing to loose sleep over. old bendix fly apart often.. that is the compensating or cushioning spring etc.. or WAS. it's scrap now.. etc..

Bruce is dead on. That's a spare starter bendix spring... Your clutch 'holding area' is made to handle quite a few starter parts! (wink)

It's the spring off of a long dead bendix. If your starter doesn't work, now you know why! Chances are it's been there for years.
