I have a 97 Dodge Dakota that will run for a couple miles then shuts down due to a lack of fuel. Let it sit for a day and it might restart. Turns out the filter and pump are all one module and they are wanting $231 for it. Any solutions other than replacing the entire module on this thing? I am 99% sure it is just a dirty fuel filter... in the old days that would be $3 cheap! but now they say you have to replace the entire "module" which is pump, filter, ascending unit and all...

Help?

James

Welcome to the "New" world of college boy/corporate designed cars!!! I sell the pumps....and yep, just about everyone howls at the prices, tho soundguy is right, we're almost HALF what the dealers get. In the 90's, you could just get a pump for under a hundred....now it's a "module"....this is to fix an earlier design flaw...a lack of cooling of the pump. New modules "spray" gas onto the pump whenever they are on, to keep em cooler, so they last longer.
On older models..if you ran a low tank a lot, you cooked the pump.
Funny thing is....the new ones seem to fail almost as fast as the older ones did....and in MY vehicle, a 93 S10 Blazer with the OLD style pump....it's at LEAST 5 yrs old...and still going!!! Go figure....
Oh, you'll also find several of the injector parts/electronics on newer ones to be unavailable thru us also.....Chrysler is real bad about this, followed by Ford....they "patent" (locking out aftermarketers like Borg-Warner, Dorman etc)certain parts, so your only source is the dealer parts counter for the first 5 to 7 yrs of so on them..... ....apparently they figure if they can't make a big profit on the actual sale.....they hammer you at the parts counter.
Nice huh?

Well, I suppose I need to slap that thing back into the tank and try a preassure reading. Should I be able to take the readin right off the top of the module and is a clean oil preassure guage suitable?

There should be a test port on the fuel rail inside the engine compartment. I doubt an oil pressure gauge will work very well. Inexpensive fuel pump pressure gauge sets are readily available.

Hi James; Un fortunately, it sounds like the auto. makers have got ya. Reminds me of when they started putting the fuelpumps in the gas tank, so you HAD to take the veh. to a garage to get it fixed!!!

I know I will never buy a new veh. again. $249.00 to get my fuel pump fixed for my F150 pu. REDICULOUS!!!!

On the lighter side, How's the "N" doing with the elec. system?? Good I hope!!

Best wishes to the family

Bob is spot on. I have a 98 dodge ram 1500.

Did same thing. I put a gauge on it.. engine stalls when pressure dropped off. Filter and pump were one module.

Back then chrysler was the only place to order the part.. napa couldn't get it.. and it was about 490$.. so I don't feel too bad for your 231$ part.

Have VERIFIED (with a gauge) that the fuel pressure begins to "taper off", finally dropping to a level at which the engine stalls?

It sure COULD be the filter, however there's lots of other things, like a bad crank sensor, or fuel pump relay, or 'puter that can shut down the fuel pump, or even just the injectors, making it SEEM like the engine "died" 'cause of a clogged filter.

If it REALLY is the filter/pump, $231.00 is a pretty good price. How much is oabor, or will this be D-I-Y?
