Above the carb on my 8N (on the intake manifold) is a small screw 'plug' - is this to attach some kind of vacuum gauge device? If so, what would the correct vacuum be for this tractor, and, what does the vacuum indicate anyway? Dont lynch me but I used it to inject some seafoam into the system to help clean it out - maybe because the stuff produces a huge cloud of smoke I am convinced it works..... third party image When the tractor was running there was a pretty strong vacuum there!!!

Back in the middle '60s I read a publication by Tom McCahll - of Mechanix Illustrated fame - which had essentially the same information - as far as I can remember. Thanks for the link, I printed it out, and it will go inside plastic page protectors.

Many moons ago, while living at home when the power went out we'd hook the vacuum lines for the milk machines up to the vacuum port you described. Dad's 8N and later the NAA, at an idle enough vacuum would build up to run 2 milkers, beet the H$*^ out of pulling the teats on all the Holstiens.

Link

Here is a link to a page I found. It isn"t the article I saw a while ago on this site but seems to have the same information.

Wow!!! Great piece of information...just printed it out and will be able to use this as I have a vacuum gauge - discovered in old garage and if I can find a suitable adaptor will perform a test - I know a compression test on each cylinder is also required but this certainly gives a lot of other options.

Thanks!!!

A few years ago, there was a post with a link in it to an article that showed pictures of the gauge with descriptions of how it should act for various conditions. If I remember correctly, it showed things like valve condition. it had to do with transient conditions like goose the throttle and watch how the gauge moves. I am sorry I cant remember more about it but maybe someone will chime in with more info.

Yep. & To attach VACCUUM MILKERS when the power went out. Most of the newfangled repo manifolds do not have this useful thing! A good place to inject stuffs into the engine. CC
