8N Rebuild - Rings or sleeves

1948 8N is smoking quite a bit. 40 psi cold, 25 hot. Running 20w min. oil. Compression tested 87 lbs for 3 cyls, the 2nd one from the front is about 70. What do I need? Rings, sleeves or both?

And is there a clear consice step by step instruction list? I'm thinking pull the pan, disconnect the pistons from the crank, pull the head, slide pistons out the top. Then get sleeves out, put new ones in, new rings, and then reverse...My problem is I don't know anything about tolerances, what to look for, how to know if it needs this or that...I have the Manual, but...having never done it....<chatter chatter chatter>

I remember a guy named Dan that was afraid to tear down his first engine, but did it anyhow. He ain't afraid anymore...

I have both, but not the technical knowledge. My brother said its probably not valves...he suggested a leak test...

If money isn't a problem you just buy labor from folks with technical savvy. Personally I have enough money to be comfortable but paying folks for "simple" repairs makes me uncomfortable ;-)

It's all about money and time. If you got plenty of both, get 'er dun! Do a complete rebuild and it'll out live you. Short of both, run it till you get more of each and reconsider.

You don't give dry and wet #'s.. re do the comp test.

Might be rings.. might be valves.

Been running it right along. In the spring it hardly smoked. Now that I've been using it, and some heavy disking work, its worse.

As Dave says, do a dry and then wet compression test first. If the tractor hasn't run in a while it could be stuck rings or stuck valves.

Post back with your results.

Danny

Untell you open it up and measure things you can't know which one or both that might be needed. Plus who knows what piston/rings you have in it or where put in it at some time. Yes you might get by with just rings but then on the other hand the cylinders could be wore bad and rings will not help it much if any

Do the test again, wet and dry. If you still get unsatisfactory results (and I suspect you will)...

I usually have the sleeves AND the pistons/rings AND the valves all done at the same time.

Sometimes you can get away with just doing one or the other, or some combination of two of the three, but often an engine that suddenly has good comprssion at the rings will demonstrate previously unnoticed valve trouble, or vice versa.

The problem is, by then the car or tractor is all put back together and it is usually HEARTBREAKING to have to tear everything apart again.

Remember, in the long run it's always easier to do it RIGHT than do it OVER.

This reply not directed at you but at the thread in general. I clicked the wrong link.

I'll try to be more careful next time.

Erick

You really got to get it miked out. Also pull the compression test with oil after dry to try to sort out rings or valves.

My advise would be not to "fix" it based on opinions on the internet, unless you get step by step guidance first.

Who knows you may jsut have a leaky exhaust valve on that cyl. Good luck

I looked at the procedure for pulling the pan and thought what the hey, the motor is comming out and going on the stand.

However if just a valve problem, that is a different story. Pull the head and the valve side panel and pop the asembly out.
