Had a brilliant idea whilst trying to sort through a tangle of old wires on a truck today....I thought, why not try the voltage tester I have - to determine which wire is live or not - you know the ones, you press the button and hold it to the wire and it beeps if it is live. Sadly my idea did not work - I was wondering though, do they make a tester like this for 12 or 6 volt car truck tractors? would be mightly useful.

If you are talking about the non-contact voltage detectors (power sniffers) they work on 120 volts AC. They need over 50 volts AC to work -- won't work on DC or less than 50 volts. You need a voltmeter or a test light to check for DC voltage in a wire -- but they are not non-contact.
Digital voltmeters from RadioShack are not pricey.
