Does anyone have the proper procedure for removing the slack out of the steering on this type of system. It's a 1948 8N

I was told to remove the bolts and turn the outside clock wise but I need to know for sure before I do this. Just want to get it right the first time.

Here's a pic of the steering. Step by step instructions would be great.

Thanks!

Smokey

Thanks Bear! I guess it's not going to hurt it if I happen to turn it the wrong way a small bit and checking the slack if it's gotten better or worse.
Yes I know SoundGuy. I need to get the FO manual and I promise I'll get one, but I count my nickeles and dimes carefully since I'm retired on S.S.

I'll bet the f0-4 manual has that info.. in any case.. you would be turning it till is (hopefully) snugged up.. etc.

I don't know whether you turn it CW or CCW.

But yes, you remove those 4 bolts and the cover washer under them.

Then take a pipe wrench that will fit the shaft housing and turn it.

I just changed the left side steering sector shaft on mine about 2 months ago.

I still haven't adjusted it. I was in too big a hurry to get it back working.

The shaft housing is round and turns in a round hole, but the hole the

sector shaft goes thru is off center. So turning the housing will move the

sector shaft closer to (or further from) the mating gear.

The shaft housing is held in place by 4 bolts but it has 8 holes.

The cover washer covers the 4 holes not being used.

Just turn the shaft housing so that the next 4 holes line up.

Now you just need to know whether it gets turned CW or CCW.
