It is hotter than hell here in Ca at the moment - and previously I put in a heavier multigrade oil - 30w50 I think. I am still getting some smoking on the 8N and was wondering - should I stay with a single weight oil or a multigrade oil and should I go with a higher wt oil in this hot weather.

Also, what happens if you mix various grade oils when topping up? I am assuming not much in these older engines.

What would be the highest grade engine oil you would feel safe running in the 8n? I dont mind going to a lower wt in the winter if need be.

Lee

Better hope it stays warm - the pour point of Nitro 70 is 16F. Below that it's a non-liquid, unpumpable, gelatinous crankcase full of dino jello. On the up side you won't have to worry about the smoke problem for long.

Sounds like your using 20W50. Might want to try a straight 40W or add a stabilizer such as Lucas.

A heavier oil will help restore oil pressure lost due to bearing and pump wear but it won't do much for worn rings.
