I am trying to get the hand throttle to stay in place at high speed - so far, all that I have accomplished is to get in a GREAT deal of practice in saying words that my wife says I can't say in front of the grandkids . . . Anyway, I've been trying to get the control out of the dash so that I can rework the wear area that rubs on the throttle plate. I've got a new plate, no luck with loosening the screws to the old one yet, maybe I'll try the propane persuader on them. Anyway, there appears to be a clamp on the end of the rod that runs down to where the linkage joins up with the rod to the governor. I've removed the nut, but I can't get the !@#$%^&* (that ought to give the spell checker a hernia) clamp off. Is there some sort of trick to get the thing off? Should it just slide off the end of the rod? Also, there appears to be a lip with a hole in it at the back side of the clamp which looks the kind of thing that a spring is hooked on to. IS there a spring missing? If so, what does the other end attach to?

Tex p have ya tried an impact screwdriver. Thats how I got the screws out of the throttle plate. I tried the J B weld fix but it will wear down after awhile. It's a little tough working behind the dash to get the throttle rod loose. I wish I had changed out the steel ball when I had the rod out.

I put just a wee dollup of JB weld on the throttle plate at the full throttle and about 75% mark. Has worked great to keep the throttle set where I want it. One of these days I'll do a proper fix but this one is a low priority.

 Re: 8N throttle--Tuneup Visual in reply to Tex P, 09-04-2007 19:04:27
Tex---I rebuilt the throttle linkage system this year on my 49 8N. The 3 screws were rusted in so badly, that after soaking in PB Blaster for a week, I finally ground off the screw heads until I could see the "center" of the screw. I then drilled a small pilot hole through the screw and the balance of the old screws popped out.

I have added a good visual that shows what all the other posters are talking about. Link

Hope>Link this helps----Tim

If you don't care what it looks like and just want it to stay, super glue two pieces of emery back to back, place under lever and it will hold throttle position just fine.

The long answer in reply to Tex P, 09-04-2007 19:04:27
Tex,

That nut you took off came off of a 1/4" bolt that runs through the linkage and holds the linkage onto the throttle rod. The throttle rod has about an 1/8 " indentation on the bolt side that the bolt runs through to keep the throttle rod from spinning on the linkage.

There is a spring on the throttle rod above the linkage that keeps tension on the whole system. It is adjusted by loosening the two bolts holding the clamp above the spring.

There should be a long spring that connects to the eye on the back-side of the linkage and to a small plate with an eye bolted to the bell housing. This spring is of minor importance but it helps to keep light tension on the throttle rod.

There is a ball on the underside of the throttle arm on that runs along the serrated face of the plate screwed to the dash. This ball often is flattened out from wear and is usually frozen in place by rust. I spread the metal and insert a new ball from an old ball bearing that I busted on the press. Then I squeeze the metal back around the ball just enough to hold it in place but let it spin.

It is a booger to get all these pieces out but you must if you want to remove the throttle rod out the top of the dash. Pay attention to where all the pieces came from in what order.

To get the plate off, use mild heat, your favorite penetrating fluid and more heat until the screws loosen. The screws are kind of special so be careful with them.

With that said, you should get the new FO4 manual. This manual has all the repair information about your N plus it has the parts manual with pictures added to the back of the manual. A must to work on N's.

Dang rite that ball is contained rite well.
For reference the steel ball is a 3/8" steel ball that is very commonly used in other places on the N tractor, mite as well pick up a few extra for later used

The "clamp" is a slider that holds a end cap ball. "Simply" (lmao slide the "clamp up the shaft enough that the ball will pop out with a lil persuasion! You should be able to feel the placement of the ball with your finger. DO NOT PRY on the clamp in an outward manner or kersnappy it goes and so do those words your wife doesn't want to hear!

Hope this helps!
