Above you see a picture of a 1949 8n that was purchased new by my Aunt Bettie. She passed away on 9/11 last year at 96 years young. It was always understood that her oldest son-in-law would get the tractor when she passed on. In a conversation with him he mentioned that he was considering having a "local tractor guy" convert it to 12v and paint it for $1500. Hearing that I stated that sounded really high and I would be glad to do it in my workshop. I estimated less than $1000 for the paint and parts. He agreed and so started my journey into this world of the redbellies. Little did I know what I was in for!

I have been reading this forum for months and without it I would not have been able to get as far as I have. It occured to me that some might enjoy seeing photos and reading about my triumphs and setbacks on what is evolving into a fairly complete restoration that started early this year.

If you would like to see more let me know.

Ike

Hey, OKDAD, did you by any chance take the rear wheel and tires off the tractor while you have had it? If not somebody has had them off sometime and put the back on "BACKWARDS". Take a good look at the picture. The right is on the left and the left is on the right. Easy to do if you had them off and away from the tractor.

Nope...That's the way I found them. Perhaps someone had been plowing backwards! They will be switched when they go back on!

Congrads on joining up with the N gang, and good luck on the restoration.

But please learn a bit from us so that you can continue to enjoy so many things about this tractor and your life. I see a very dangerous hook-up for pulling the stuck SUV. Your tow straps are connected way too high on the tractor, possibly the upper lift arms from what I can see. If you begin a hard pull with that hook-up, you can easily flip the 8N right over onto its back, and you (or whomever is driving) will be squished like a bug on the windshield. Depending on many different circumstances, this can happen incredibly fast.

For hard pulls, only hook to the tractor very low, and better to not hook to the 3 pt linkage at all. Hooking to a solid straight-back rear drawbar is the best and safest way. We care!!

Best Wishes for your restoration project.

Paul,
I have already learned a ton from this site. The shed in the background was where the tractor and brush hog had been for about 10 years. Disconnected the brush hog and pulled it out of the way, wrapped the tow strap around the axle and VERY SLOWLY pulled the tractor out.

Looks to me like the SUV is pulling the tractor, since the grass is "unbent" behind the rear tires (which appear to be mounted "back'ards").

The ol' goat on the N looks like my twin brother.

Yep...they came that way. The old goat is my friend Bill. As far as I know he has no twins although his 7 brothers don't claim him either.

Would enjoy seeing pics. I like seeing the old dented and dirty working tractors just as much as the make-over queens.
While you have the rear wheels off for paint, switch them side to side.

We would like to see Bettie get a face lift, and be able to watch the progress. (You won't want to give her back!)

Really don't need another toy myself. Only have 5 acres here and I have a JD4200 hydro w/loader, brushog, box blade, and PHD. Spoiled huh?

But if he ever gets rid of "Bettie" I will be first in line.
