8N Front tranny oil seal Replacement

I know this topic has been discussed many times over, but please bear with me just a bit. I have the 47 8N split for clutch disc and pressure plate replacement. Of course I replaced the throwout bearing and the pilot bearing.

Many times members of this board have suggested also replacing the tranny front seal while it is split. There is no evidence of tranny oil leakage, old clutch disc was completely dry. I have studied my FO-4 and can't tell for sure whether a bearing or spacer may drop into the tranny if I pull the front nose housing with input shaft in it. I did buy the new front seal, but it did not come with a nose housing gasket which probably affects the bearing end loading. I do not want to mess up the tranny by dropping something into the depths of the soup, and worse yet, not knowing that something has dropped and just awaits its turn to jump up between rotating gears some day.

Part of me says "if it ain't leaking, don't mess with it", and the other part of me says "you'd be a fool to put it together without replacing that seal". Thus I'm a total mess...oh well, I have had worse problems (or "issues").

Your thoughts, please.

Thank You,

Paul in MN

No parts to worry about falling into the tranny. Just remove the four bolts and pull it out. Once it's out, grasp the trans. drive gear on the back of the housing and pull the input shaft out of the housing. Then you'll see the seal. There "shouldn't" be any metal shims behind the housing as the preload is set at the factory by shimming the bearing retainer on the other end of the mainshaft (deep in the belly of the tractor). All you should find is a thin paper gasket behind the housing once it's off. Strange things happen in the life of a tractor, though, so look for metal shims and be sure to reinstall them as found when you put the shaft back in. If you don't have a gasket on hand, just use a thin coating of silicone sealer and forget it. The housing will likely be closer to the trans. case without a gasket and it will tighten up the bearing preload a hair, but after 50 years, there has been a fair amount of wear and snugging things up just the thickness of a gasket isn't going to hurt a thing. It's an easy job. Too easy to not do it while you're there and have a seal in your hand.

Joe,

Yup, that is the info I needed before tearing into that front shaft housing. Thanks for the details and the encouragement.

Thanks also to Dan and Bob for the encouragement and quick replies.

The new seal will be in place later this afternoon.

Make sude you do not install the seal backwards. rememger you are installing the seal from the back side not the front.

"Of course I replaced the throwout bearing and the pilot bearing."

Paul - if you are replacing the throwout bearing and pilot bearing as a matter of course - then I know you ALREADY know the answer to your question...

Replace the seal while you're in there.

Measure the thickness of the old gasket(s) vs. what your're putting back in, just to be sure.
