Did I miss something here???

Just got the 8n block back with new sleeves, dropped the reground crank in to check clearances and found this. On the rear main the studs are different lengths. I'll swear there was nothing else under the nut when I took it apart but clearly the stud is too long. (Yes it is screwed all the way into the block.)

The short stud measures 1.59" and the long one 1.82" out of the block. Should they be the same length? Did I forget something?

Thanks,
Ike

There is a long stud used for the front cap/oilpump. double check that isn't it. barring that, I had the same problem with a few of mine. I managed to get them to screw down into the block more to get the right height. Another possibility??? is that a blind hole? I cant remember....It might have something in it. That is something that I have never seen addressed is making sure that the stud lengths are set right during the rebuild. I hated tearing mine all down again just to adjust a stud....Hope you get it.....Tim

Tim,
Thanks for the response. I spoke with the machine shop and they did remove the studs and reinstall. I removed the stud (not easy) to find the threads in the block very rough. Also they dont start for about .2" down into the hole. Ran a tap through them and on the stud and screwed it down to the correct length. Problem solved.

Ike

Great. glad you got er fixed. I hear you on the difficult removal. I finally bought a stud extractor/installer pretty expensive at a tool store, then I saw almost the exact same one in harbour freight. They work really well and makes the job easy. By the way if you have head studs use a set of calipers or dividers to set the height of the head studs as well. It really looks like crap if you got one of those too short or long.....time well spent....Tim
