I would like to mount a hitch/ball to the front of my 8N to move a trailer around the property - would it be ok to mount it through one of the adjustment holes on the front cross members>

Get the bumper. I hitch up my trailers with the bush hog on the back. Move them and mow as I go...Then park the trailer where I found it.. Handy for other things...

Dad had one like pictured on the posts below on his new '51 8N and pushed fully loaded flare wagon loads of beans into the shed for 20 years with it. Fully loaded rear tires on the N too. Never had any hitch or axle problems. Only problem was the hitch was a bit too high and the front of the tractor would rare up and slide sideways, so you had to straighten it all out and go for a running shot through the mud hole. This was usually after it started raining and you were in a hurry anyway. Good old days? sometimes I wonder!

I've always felt that it wouldn't be wise to tow very much with a front mounted hitch ball.

The front axle is not held on to the tractor by much (a center pivot and the two radius rods).

I don't have a hitch ball mounted on my bumper so that I don't get "tempted" to use it third party image

Get the toungue weight ballanced and they make for a half way decent 'tender'

For sure i wouldn't want to move any abusive loads.. but just dragging a trailer around to move it to mow, and etc.. should be fine..

Those front bumper hitches are actually too high to use as a proper trailer hitch, but will work in a pinch. Remember that the front axle is not for heavy pulling, as it all comes down to your king pin and you don't want to pull that off!

Lee,
Getting a bumper for your 8N, like the one I have in the background seems like the most practical and safest way. I do it all the time...

I like that paint color! in reply to Rush-N, 09-07-2007 08:13:58
I was "thissss...." close to painting my 9N something close to that blue-gray. I'd even mixed the paint but decided it would look better on a couple lathes. Or is that just the camera?

The earlier picture posted was taken over three years ago. This second picture was taken this year from a different angle in the garage. I understand and appreciate the comments of the cleanliness of my garage, but keep in mind I spend most of my waking hours in this place, so keeping it clean is just one of my many hobbies. Plus its a hobby that doesn't cost as much as the ones in the background...

I went back to drink'in after a 10 year lay off, in them 10 years I liked to work myself to death. I did not have a drink'in problem but coaching ball and being around other kids I did not want them to git any ideas, so after I sent my boy off to collage I started keep'n a few cold ones around, I think theirs a connection here cuzz I don't see the junk any more.

I have a buddy that runs a shop, his dirtiest place is cleaner than my clean"izz place. So one day i said to my self, self I am gonna be clean and neat as my buddy Steve. After about a week of put stuff back were its spose to be I could not find a thing so I am back to were I had it last. I do keep a spotless floor tho, can not stand to walk on dirt or grease.

Shoot if I kept my shop that clean I would never be able to find any thing in it. My shop is a mess 24/7 and seems every time I do clean it up I spend to many hours tring to find stuff

Get to tractor supply, or a cnh dealer, or your local farm store.. get a bumper for that 8n... and then put a ball on the front tang/hole inthe front of the bumper. Many here do that.. ( I do.. )
