Was cutting some grass today, my steering wheel got real tight, then I could no longer turn left! I can turn the steering wheel, but the front wheels don"t move. I can turn right a little bit. Kinda hard to get it out of the yard, I drove it in by getting off and turning th front wheels by hand.

What is the usual cause of this problem? I have not torn into it yet, wanted to get some advice first.
Thanks,
Gary

Well, the top bearing disintegrated and fell down in the gears and bottom of the box, just like everybody said. But the good thing is the gears are not damaged. Bad thing is, there was no oil at all in the box, the metal plug below the bottom bushing leaked and it all ran into the bellhousing! So I need to change that, too I guess. Got to get some parts ordered.

Thanks for the help!

Gary

Well, I hope its just that top bearing! I'm going to take a closer look at it shortly, just took the hood and dash off. It may not be too bad, it turns right ok, but I noticed when trying to turn left, the steering shaft just screws itself out of the top of the column, and the wheels don't move. Then turning right, it just screws back in. It doesn't seem stuck, and I didn't force it. It'll probably be a messy job, I pumped all the gooey lube in there I could, hoping this wouldn't happen!

Thanks for the info!
Gary

If yuo havn't forced the gears to mesh with the bearing balls in them.. you may be lucky and just in for a top bearing and 'ball fishing' expedition...

what has happened is your top bearing has come apart, one or more of the little balls in the bearing is wedged in the sector gears, not a bad job to fix, my jubilee has the same steering box and has done it 4 times, im looking for a good box for it, as im tired of rebuilding this one at least 2 times a year, youll have to remove the top section and go fishing with a magnet on a stick, if you find all the parts, just replace the bearing, its avalible from this site as well as the race too

When mine did that it was just the top bearing.

You likely will have to replace your sector gears. Not a hard job at all. Get the IT FO-4 manual if you don't already have it.
